Walter Cronkite
Former CBS anchorman and Daily Texan staffer Walter Cronkite died Friday evening at the age of 92, leaving behind the echo of a voice that defined the broadcast news era and represented the University.
Many UT students don’t recognize Walter Cronkite for his coverage of the moon landing or the Vietnam War. They know him primarily for his gravelly voice narrating popular UT ads.
Walter Cronkite’s close ties to the University and its students took a new meaning in 1974 when he sipped whiskey and chatted in a student apartment at a Daily Texan gathering.
Editor’s Note: When Walter Cronkite visited Austin in 1983 for UT’s Centennial, he was interviewed by a Texan staffer in a car en route to campus.
Editor’s Note: When Cronkite worked as a reporter at The Daily Texan, he had the opportunity to interview author Gertrude Stein before she spoke at Hogg Auditorium in 1935.
Editor’s Note: Cronkite visited UT in 1974 as managing editor of “The CBS Evening News” in the wake of Watergate and spoke with students about the scandal and the possibility of teaching at the University after leaving his anchor post.
