A UT student died after being hit by a car near the intersection 15th and Lavaca streets on Friday.

Austin Police Department officers responded to the incident at 5:36 p.m. and EMS promptly transported 21-year-old Brianna Nichole Becker, a government and philosophy senior, to University Medical Center at Brackenridge, where she was pronounced deceased.

“We got on scene and ascertained that a vehicle came out of a private driveway and struck a jogger who was jogging down the sidewalk,” said APD Cpl. Paul Kaderli.

Becker was an avid participant in Young Conservatives of Texas attaining the position of Vice Chairman of Chapter Development. She also attended the University Lutheran Church.

Kaderli said as the SUV was turning eastbound on 15th street, out of a driveway between Lavaca and Colorado streets, it struck Becker who was jogging west.

The SUV that struck the Becker was identified as a brown Nissan Pathfinder.

Kaderli said he was not sure if the driver of the Pathfinder was alone or not. He said 15th Street is “not historically [dangerous], it’s unusual.”

A United States Postal Service employee was told to remain on scene to provide information for APD, since his white USPS truck was close to the incident.

Several citizens watched and questioned what happened, each grabbing for their cell phones and cameras on Friday. A family stood crowded about a white Chevy car, crying, not willing to give a comment.

Officers painted the vehicles¹ position on the road for the ongoing investigation. APD announced that neither alcohol nor excessive speed were factors in the accident.

APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit is seeking additional information of the incident. Citizens are asked to contact the unit's detectives at 512-974-4506. This is the 45th traffic fatality of 2009.

“Everyone be aware of everyone around you,” Kaderli said. “Drivers need to be aware of pedestrians and pedestrians should be aware of drivers too.”

This is such a tragedy. DRIVERS need to slow down and pay attention. I can comment on this from experience, as I was walking on the SIDEWALK of Guadalupe heading north when I was hit by a suburban who was speeding and lost control and ran up onto the sidewalk & hospitalized. People need to pay attention, especially since this is a college town and there a tons of pedestrians every day. My prayers go out to Brianna's family,.

Such a tragedy! I have no doubt that Brianna was not at fault, but either walking or jogging, you have to watch out for cars and SUVs. To many students walking through lights or traffic, texting, I-pod or on the phone..thinking that all cars will see them and stop. If only this was true.

This is an incredibly tragic story about a real person!! I appreciate Cprl Kaderli bringing it home for all of us. The article needs to be posted everywhere!! I came within inches of being mowed down on Gaudelupe last week by a speeding motorist who ran a red light and kept on going. If it weren't for one of the Hobos behind me jerking me back and out of harms way I would also be the topic of another stab at journalism. There is a life lesson here!! What more can be done to protect the UT pedestrians before another life is loss!!

Hilary, to me it doesn't seem to be the drivers so much as the pedestrians and bikers especially. This particular case is sad and I doubt very much that it was her fault, but there have been many other instances around the campus area where people just walk, and don't watch out for cars. Also, bikers NEVER stop at stop signs in this city. It is incredibly dangerous, I just want people to know it is not just the drivers that need to be careful, it is everyone's responsibility to watch out for others on the road. I am not in favor of giving tickets to jaywalkers mainly because most people are cautious when walking across the street, (sadly this accident happened at a garage where it was probably difficult to see the car) I would like to see officers ticket bikers who blatantly run through stop signs and red lights.

I hope that her family gets through this incredibly difficult time and I will keep them in my prayers.

Never in any other city have I had so many near misses when walking (or cycling) by drivers not paying attention. I always assume drivers do not see me, particularly trucks and SUVs. Hopefully this will wake up Austin drivers, get them off the phone, and start paying attention to PEOPLE around them.

The Driver of the car was at fault. People on the sidewalk should be safe. The driver should be charged with acccidental vehicular homicide. Let a court decide what he is guilty of.

What a sad story. So many people jog around downtown- it could have been anyone. Prayers to her family and friends.

What's the story on the driver? Did he/she stop or keep going? I'm assuming they stopped, but it says contact vehicular homicide with information....

This time last year I sat next to her in one of my classes. She was a great person who always made me laugh. She had so much going on for her. She will be missed. Rest in peace, Brianna.

I knew Brianna since elementary school. She was a wonderful person - very cheerful, honest, and compassionate. It saddens me that she has passed away at such a young age. RIP.

I don't think I ever met Brianna, but she followed me on Twitter. It seems like she had a lot of people who loved her. I'm so sorry for your loss, all of you.

Jackie, there's no need for that. If there is no additional medical help that can be provided and the area is secured, then it is entirely appropriate to document the situation by taking photos, writing down license plate numbers, etc. It helps later to have documentation to show the police or the insurance company or to maybe even provide some info to the grieving family who wants to know what exactly happened. I speak from experience of having been in an accident last year.
