The University Health Services has issued an online health survey to 10,000 undergraduate, graduate and law school students throughout the campus to determine the most pressing health needs of UT students.
The University is one of more than 300 colleges and universities in the U.S. that participates in the National College Health Assessment designed by the American College Health Association. The health association has been helping universities collect data about students' health habits and behaviors since the spring of 2000. Questions about alcohol and drug use, nutrition and personal safety are included in the 64-question survey.
Sandi Cleveland, a manager for the University Health Services, said as of Thursday, the health services office had only received about 2,300 completed surveys. She added that for the size of UT, at least 1,000 participants are needed to generalize the data for the entire University.
Of the 10,000 students, half received the survey used since spring 2000, while the other 5,000 received a pilot survey. The last time the health services used this survey was in 2006. Results from the survey showed students faced issues with sleeping habits. As a result, the health services department is developing programs to assist students with sleeping needs. Today is the last day to complete the survey, and some participants will receive a prize upon completion.
