UT cheerleaders put on a show for a crowd of aspiring cheerleaders Tuesday in an effort to increase enrollment at the North Austin YMCA and showcase the group’s new classes.
The cheerleaders visited the North Austin YMCA to celebrate the club’s new cheerleading and dance classes and to help teach some routines to audience members. The UT cheerleaders performed for roughly 30 minutes as about 20 girls, from 3 to 6 years old, mimicked their routines.
After the performance, the young girls were able to meet the cheerleaders in person and have autographs signed.
Cheerleaders Lauren Farmer, Jordan Brown, Amy Alexander and Alex Locasto guided some girls through some of the squad’s routines, including “Texas Fight” and “The Eyes of Texas.”
“I remember going to events like this and wanting to become a cheerleader,” Farmer said. “Hopefully this made an impact on their lives.”
Michael Valdez, director of the Youth Program at the North Austin YMCA, said he called on the UT cheerleaders to help showcase the club’s efforts to enroll students in the new classes.
Valdez said the performance was to bring in members of the local community to the YMCA.
He said he hopes the performance added interest to cheerleading and the classes offered at the center.
“I came from a huge YMCA,” Valdez said. “So when I came to this one, I really wanted to see it grow.”
