UT grief counselors are working overtime after a student death at the campus's main gym several weeks ago.
A male UT student died by suicide at a pool in the Gregory Gymnasium on Oct. 17. The UT Police Department responded to a medical emergency call at about 5 p.m. that afternoon.
The student was transported to Brackenridge Hospital and died Sunday Oct. 21, University spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said.
Weldon said she did not want to disclose any further information about the incident because of the nature of the death.
Jane Bost, associate director of the center, said she wants students to know about the crisis prevention resources available to them.
"We try to approach this on a preventive level," she said of UT's Counseling and Mental Health Center. "We strive to help those who are in a lot of pain."
Bost said the center hopes to employ a full-time specialist to perform "aggressive suicide prevention work" as soon as next summer.
Chris Brownson, director of the center, students can call campus or national phone numbers anonymously.
"Every semester, we see a lot of students who feel suicidal," he said. "We want them to know there is a treatment. We can help them."
