Texas Exes honored 65 students and two administrators for their contributions to the University at the 2002 Student Leadership Awards Tuesday.

Several councils and organizations including the executive board of the Texas Exes Student Chapter, the Cabinet of College Councils and The Eyes Of Texas, a campus leadership organization, select the winners annually.

"This is a big university with about 50,000 students, so being a leader here is a true mark of distinction," said Jim Vick, vice president for student affairs. "The University takes great pride in developing the skills of our students as young leaders."

Keith Rainwater, a government senior, received the Edward S. Guleke Student Excellence Award for his participation on campus that exceeded academic success.

Andrew Friedberg, a finance senior, was one of seven students to receive the President's Leadership Award.

"If you find a lot of spare time in your day, you are not taking advantage of everything the University of Texas at Austin offers," said Friedberg, the only President's Leadership Award recipient to also receive a life membership in Texas Exes.

Brenda Burt, coordinator for the Multicultural Information Center and Tom Dison, associate vice president for student affairs and director of recreational sports, received the Glenn Maloney Award and Margaret C. Berry Award, respectively, for exceptional devotion amongst faculty and staff members.

Felice Trirogoff, a public relations senior, and Austin Gilliland, a communication studies junior, received Maralyn S. Hemlich Scholarships given to outstanding UT orientation leaders.

Twelve students were honored as Cactus Outstanding Students and 18 were named Cactus Goodfellows. Seventeen additional students were recognized as the Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities.

"Both the strength and the future of the University depends in a very real way on what you do with your lives," said John Fainter, president of Texas Exes.

Other students receiving the President's Leadership Award included Phuong Tran, a communication studies senior; Dimitria Aldridge, an electrical engineering senior; Sonia Nezamzadeh, a journalism senior; Erin Dominguez, a history senior; Jonathan Mureen, a communications junior and Timothy Taliaferro, a Plan II sophomore.
