A female pedestrian walking across Guadalupe Street just south of 27th Street was struck by a car Thursday afternoon and taken away by paramedics.

"It was awful. I've never seen anything like that before," said English sophomore Rebecca Katz. Katz was sitting in her car at the 27th Street crosswalk while waiting for the traffic light.

Witnesses said the pedestrian was walking about 10 feet away from the crosswalk while the traffic light was green. Katz said she heard the pedestrian scream right before she was struck by a silver Toyota Corolla.

Local real estate agent Michael Olds spoke to the victim before paramedics arrived. He said the victim seemed conscious at the time. He saw the victim had suffered head trauma but said she could feel her feet. Olds said he was walking back from lunch with a friend when he saw the victim lying on her side in the middle of the street. Olds was one of the witnesses on the scene who dialed 911.

Austin Fire Department and Austin Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene just before 3 p.m. The victim looked to be in her 20s, with a visible head injury on her forehead.

The driver of the vehicle did not want to comment. Two of her friends comforted her while they spoke with police.

The Austin Police Department said it was investigating the pedestrian-vehicle accident.
