UT students from more than 15 organizations joined together to celebrate the beginning of C.A.R.E. Week.
Kappa Phi Gamma hosts C.A.R.E. Week, which stands for Cancer Awareness: A Real Effort, to recognize and support cancer patients and their families.
Students on the West Mall displayed boards exposing little-known facts about cancer with such messages as "non-smokers can still develop lung cancer from second-hand smoke."
"People are aware of cancer but not the fact that it can happen to them," said Mena Amin, an economics senior and president of Kappa Phi Gamma. "There is no dominant race; it can happen to anyone."
Journalism senior Shara Challa said organizers started C.A.R.E. Week nine years ago to expose misconceptions about the disease.
"We started this event because cancer affects everyone - all races, all genders, all ethnicities," Challa said. "So we thought it was really important to raise awareness about all cancers."
During the week, Kappa Phi Gamma will hold a fundraiser at Pita Pit, a Mr. C.A.R.E. Week pageant and a party to raise funds for Austin's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The group will also sponsor a candlelight vigil Wednesday night for families of cancer victims.
