Strong winds proved to be no match for the Longhorns’ determination as they surged ahead to claim seven titles in Saturday’s events at the Texas Invitational.

The windy conditions produced gusts reaching 20-30 mph throughout the day’s competition. But Texas simply decided to push all negative thoughts aside and power through it.

WACO, Texas— The NCAA put Baylor on three years of probation Wednesday after an investigation turned up hundreds of impermissible telephone calls and text messages sent to prep recruits by coaches and assistants on the basketball teams.

The violations were considered to be major infractions, and they were announced less than a week after the Lady Bears won the national championship with the first 40-0 season in NCAA history.

There’s a growing debate in college basketball about what to do with so-called “one-and-done” players — those select few athletes who leave college after one season for a big payday in the NBA.

The Kentucky Wildcats won the NCAA Championship Monday night with a team loaded with “one-and-done” players, beating Kansas 67-59. UK freshmen Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Anthony Davis and Marcus Teague will likely be first-round picks in June’s NBA Draft.

Its Final Four time. The underdogs have been dealt with, and the Cinderellas have sent home: this one is exclusive. After a couple of seasons of upsets, and unlikely runs to the national semis, only the blue bloods of basketball made it through this one.

Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State and Kansas are the four teams left, and they collectively combine for 13 National Championships and 44 Final Four appearances, counting this season(it would be 45, but Ohio State had a Final Four vacated by the NCAA).

The 85th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays kicked off with the seven-event heptathlon Wednesday afternoon. The heptathlon embodies the essence of the Relays; the competition is multi-faceted, it challenges mental endurance and it requires well-rounded athleticism.

Besides handing out 30 automatic bids to the NCAA tournament, Championship Week serves as a stage for elite teams trying to secure a quality tournament seed and gives bubble teams one last chance to prove they are worthy of the Big Dance. Here’s what to look for in this week’s major conference tournaments.

Big 12

After failing to lock up a signature win against an in-conference power during the regular season, the Longhorns will likely need to win at least their first matchup against Iowa State to make the NCAA tournament.

The American Short Course Relays, held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center, kicked off yesterday with a total of 10 events, five each for men and women. The three-day event is a final opportunity for swimmers from colleges across the country to earn points to qualify for the NCAA swimming championships. After a 7-5 loss to UT-Arlington last Tuesday, head coach Augie Garrido was asked if his team was ready to play Stanford — his response was a no-nonsense “No”.

Unfortunately for Texas, Garrido was right. The Longhorns were shellacked over the three game series, as the Cardinals outscored Texas 28-5 in a sweep. The series loss was capped off by a 15-1 beatdown on Sunday, in which Texas gave up 13 runs in the fourth inning, only eight runs short of the NCAA record for most runs allowed in an inning.

Baseball is a long season, but it never hurts to get out of the gates quickly. That is exactly what Texas will attempt to do today on opening day.

“I think it’s really important to get off to a good start,” said sophomore Nathan Thornhill. “I feel like a good start establishes good rhythm, and you want to win as many games as you can whether it’s the first one or the last one.”

Senior infielder Lexy Bennett is excited to be back on the field. Towards the end of the 2011 regular season, Bennett was forced to watch her team from the bench after a rouge pitch injured her right arm in a game against Iowa State. After turning in a .438 batting average with 57 hits and 41 RBIs last season, the senior’s presence on the field is crucial to the Longhorn’s game plan as they seek to make it to the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.

To her it was her dream come true. A sport she loved, playing for a team she loved, in a city she loved. Lexy Bennett, a senior infielder on the Texas softball team, always dreamed of becoming a Longhorn. When she was 5-years-old she started playing T-ball baseball in a youth league in her hometown. With the implementation of the Longhorn Network this season, the University of Texas has been both praised and criticized for its multimillion dollar decision. Although the Longhorn Network has been credited with the exodus of four different universities to new conference homes, here on the 40 Acres it can provide some positive opportunities.

For the softball team, the Longhorn Network could prove to be a powerful tool to help them overcome some recent bad luck on the national stage.

On a team ranked No. 2 in the country, it can be difficult to stand out. Senior swimmer Neil Caskey has done this and more for the Longhorns all season long.
