I am writing to respond to the editorial board’s endorsement of Bill Spelman for City Council. I don’t take issue with your support of my opponent. I do take issue with the failure to accurately describe my agenda and platform. The notion that I am “firmly opposed to any progressive change on council” demonstrates a failure to actually follow this election and listen to my positions at nearly two dozen forums and meetings.

Most importantly, this situation stands as an opportunity for instituting long-lasting change at The Texan.

The Daily Texan Editorial Board endorses John Lawler and Terrence Maas for Student Government president and vice president. The Lawler/Maas campaign has made several pledges to the student body that include improving safety and promoting sustainability on campus. Though the campaign uses many vacuous buzzwords, such a “accountability” and “affordability,” Lawler’s track record shows he is capable of making progress in many of the areas he and Maas identify in their campaign.

The Election Supervisory Board disqualified recently reinstated Student Government candidates Madison Gardner and running mate Antonio Guevara Wednesday for falsification of financial records, disregarding an election fine and failure to comply with the Election Code.

“I am pursuing my Ph.D. in biochemistry,” I said, responding as I normally do to this common question. The woman’s eyes grew large. She laughed and replied, “I could never do that!”

She meant her words as a compliment, but they just sadden me. Never. She could never do science.

Student Government presidential candidate John Lawler was 10 years old when he served in his first elected position as president of the Oak Trailer Park club. As president, Lawler threw birthday parties for children who could not afford them and planned community activities.

Eleven years later, urban studies senior Lawler and computer science sophomore and running mate Terrence Maas are planning more than hosting community birthday parties.
