SAN DIEGO — A college student picked up in a federal drug sweep in California was never arrested, never charged and should have been released. Instead, authorities say, he was forgotten in a holding cell for four days.

Without food, water or access to a toilet, Daniel Chong had to drink his own urine to survive and began hallucinating after three days because of a lack of nourishment, his lawyer said.

Reflecting on my two years of work at the Daily Texan, two important motifs come to mind again and again: anxiety and food. The two go hand in hand. At the Texan, when you’re hunched over your desk, eyes glazed over from hours spent staring at the computer screen and exhausted from that stress dream you had the night before, the only real remedy is food, followed by perhaps a few drinks and a nap in the office.

Just two years ago, when petroleum engineering senior Allison Boyle thought of what would be on the menu for dinner that night, processed foods such as macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles came to mind.

But as the 2011 new year approached, Boyle decided to make a change. She made a resolution to start cooking a new meal every week and blog about it. Thus, her food blog, The Best of Thymes, was born.

Dan Nelson sat contentedly reading a book on a quiet Friday evening as he waited for his order at ViUDA Bistro in Buda — the chef’s special “The Corruption,” a pan-seared pork loin over celery root potatoes with sweet pepper garnish and au jus. WASHINGTON — The first new case of mad cow disease in the U.S. since 2006 has been discovered in a dairy cow in California, but health authorities said Tuesday the animal never was a threat to the nation’s food supply.

The infected cow, the fourth ever discovered in the U.S., was found as part of an Agriculture Department surveillance program that tests about 40,000 cows a year for the fatal brain disease.

No meat from the cow was bound for the food supply, said John Clifford, the department’s chief veterinary officer.

RUBKONA, South Sudan — Sudanese warplanes bombed a market and an oil field in South Sudan on Monday, killing at least two people after Sudanese ground forces had reportedly crossed into South Sudan with tanks and artillery, elevating the risk of all-out war between the two old enemies.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry also rejected the U.N. Security Council’s condemnation of Friday’s launch of a long-range rocket as “unreasonable,” and reasserted the nation’s right to develop a civilian space program.

The thought of UT students learning something from their traditional rivals in College Station may seem tantamount to blasphemy for many. However, recent campus controversy surrounding a move by John Sharp, chancellor of the Texas A&M University System, to outsource university operations like food, housing and facilities maintenance could serve as a valuable lesson for students and employees at UT.

It’s peak crawfish season, and restaurants around town are crawling with the tasty critters. Technically, you can get crawfish almost year round, but they tend to be the biggest and tastiest from March to June.

Widely known around the world as crayfish, or écrevisse in French, these freshwater crustaceans are also called crawdads or mudbugs. They are related to lobsters but are much smaller, averaging about seven inches long and dating back to the late 1700s.
