The Daily Texan sat down with associate professor Ben Carrington to discuss a variety of topics, including UT’s slow integration process to the Rooney Rule, to what the University athletic department can do to separate itself as a beacon of diversity. Carrington’s research interests include the politics of race and sport, African diaspora studies, masculinity and national identity formation and the nature of cultural resistance within the arena of popular culture.
SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker scored 18 points and the San Antonio Spurs handed Utah its second-worst playoff loss in franchise history, beating the Jazz 114-83 on Wednesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series.
NBA Coach of the Year Gregg Popovich practically put the Spurs on autopilot after a 20-0 run in the second quarter that stunned the Jazz, who had vowed to play better after the Spurs easily won Game 1. But this humiliating rout was even easier.
Everyone remembers the player that breaks the color barrier.
But what of the coach? The most famous African-American to defy a color barrier in the world of sports is the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson. For the Texas football program, it’s Julius Whittier, a lineman who became the first black Longhorns football player in 1970.
After a couple tough outings last month, it seemed like Corey Knebel couldn’t handle pitching more than an inning or two at a time.
Editor’s Note: This is the fifth in an eight-part series about Longhorns hoping to be drafted into the NFL.
Blake Gideon has witnessed plenty of ups and downs during his four years at Texas and his 52 career starts as safety, from dropping an interception during Texas’ game against Tech in 2008 to catching an interception during the national championship game in 2009 to Texas’ 5-7 season in 2010.
John Curtiss and Hoby Milner both began the season as starting pitchers.
All 18 protesters arrested Wednesday in the lobby of President William Powers Jr.’s office were released from Austin Police Department custody Thursday morning and gathered on the Tower steps at noon to reiterate their message and rally support.
The protesters, who are members of the Make UT Sweatshop-Free Coalition, drew more than 50 people to the rally.
Texas has its fair share of great coaches.
Compared to the tumultuous child sex scandal at Penn State, Bobby Petrino’s wrongdoings seem relatively minor.
But there is no doubt that these wrongdoings are cause for his termination.
WACO, Texas— The NCAA put Baylor on three years of probation Wednesday after an investigation turned up hundreds of impermissible telephone calls and text messages sent to prep recruits by coaches and assistants on the basketball teams.
The violations were considered to be major infractions, and they were announced less than a week after the Lady Bears won the national championship with the first 40-0 season in NCAA history.
UT is an athletic powerhouse. Its teams are consistently ranked on the national level; as a result, the personnel coaching them is some of the best-paid in the country. But with budget cuts left and right and higher education receiving the brunt of the impact, one must wonder: Are these salaries truly justified? After all, Mack Brown, the highest paid coach in college sports, brings in almost $5.2 million annually before bonuses and incentives.
Baylor’s men’s and women’s basketball programs are currently under investigation regarding a series of more than 1,200 impermissible texts and calls to potential recruits.
In a year that saw the Texas Men’s Swimming and Diving team earn many individual and team awards, it’s only fitting that the second ranked squad in the country claim a few more accolades at the season’s end. Texas won the Big 12 title in February and finished second at the National Championships last month.
Over the weekend, the Horns racked up a few more awards to add to a trophy case already bursting at the seams, as Texas claimed all five yearly Big 12 awards.
Seeing him walk off the track at Texas Relays, sporting a huge smile as he became the new focal point of every flashing camera, you could almost see the imaginary cape draped across his shoulders.
But Isaac Murphy’s smile was actually one of shock and disbelief that he had accomplished something so great. What appeared to be an almost effortless series of events leading to his victory were nearly unbearable the week before.
Opening day is upon us and the Houston Astros will be celebrating their 50th anniversary when they take on the Colorado Rockies on April 6 at Minute Maid Park.
Last season the Astros went 56-106 and finished last in the National League.
The Astros have named five pitchers to the opening rotation.
Six years after leaving her post as recruiting coordinator at Texas, Karen Aston has rejoined the Longhorns, this time as their head coach.
The Longhorns got one step closer to signing their next head coach on Monday.
The University of Texas System Board of Regents authorized the hiring of a new women’s basketball coach in a special meeting Monday morning. The regents granted both President Bill Powers and women’s athletic director Chris Plonsky the authority to execute a contract.
Beverly Kearney is a chameleon of sorts.
During track season, you’ll likely spot “Coach Bev” on a Monday afternoon in a casual jumpsuit, whizzing around Mike A. Myers Stadium with a hurried determination, perhaps making an intermittent pit stop to critique a relay team’s baton handoff or to tell a long-distance runner to adjust her pace.
It’s been an up-and-down season for Texas.
After six years spent coaching women’s swimming at UT, head coach Kim Brackin is parting ways with the university, the Women’s Athletics Department announced today.
In her six seasons as head coach, Brackin brought the Longhorns to four top 10 finishes but no national titles despite an impressive roster of top-recruited swimmers. This year, the team earned 20 All-America honors and seven honorable mentions and placed ninth at the NCAA Championships.
Texas may have found its successor.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey confirmed with the Austin America-Statesman that North Texas head coach Karen Aston will take over the Texas program from Gail Goestenkors who resigned after Texas’ first round bow out of the NCAA tournament.
Aston served as an assistant coach under Mulkey and is said to have texted her the news.
The Orange and White game is upon us. It’s time to see what Mack Brown and the Longhorns have been working on since Texas’ victory at the Holiday Bowl in January.
With the offense strongly focused on the running game, the team has been working on improving the passing side of the offense.
To Longhorns coach Beverly Kearney, the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays are much more than a sporting event.
“This is a chance for us to really show off the greatness of our city. Everybody [is] growing to love Texas and to love Austin. This is an event that gives us an opportunity to enjoy it. The Relays have blossomed into the urban music festival and so many other events representing so many other components of our community that it’s grown bigger than just the [meet].”
Texas hasn’t had a tight end catch more than 16 passes or rack up 200 receiving yards in any of the past four seasons. Meanwhile, the Longhorns men’s swimming and diving squad — under the tutelage of the legendary Eddie Reese — has won 33 consecutive conference championships, 10 NCAA titles and 26 top-three finishes, including a second place finish this year.
If Rick Barnes’ salary determined how his team would perform, the Longhorns may have had a spot in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, rather than a first round bow out to Cincinnati.
