ViUDA Bistro, a restaurant in Buda only eight months old, serves up delicious food along with a different culture. Owner Paul Rutowski and many of the restaurant staff are deaf. ViUDA Bistro has become a gathering place for the Deaf community, along with being a place where everyone can go for inexpensive, flavorful dishes.

Editor’s note: Last week, 18 members of the Make UT Sweatshop-Free Coalition protested the University’s affiliation with the Fair Labor Association, a group that monitors working conditions. The protesters demanded that the University switch membership to the Worker Rights Consortium. After protesting outside of President William Powers Jr.’s office in the Main Building for hours, they were arrested for trespassing by UT Police Department.

CAIRO — An Egyptian court on Tuesday upheld a conviction against one of the Arab world’s most famous comedians, sentencing him to jail for offending Islam in some of his most popular films.

The case against Adel Imam and others like it have raised concerns among some Egyptians that ultraconservative Muslims who made gains in recent elections after Hosni Mubarak’s ouster last year are trying to foist their religious views on the entire country. Critics say the trend threatens to curb Egypt’s vibrant film industry and freedom of speech.

Christopher Hitchens never followed the rules of polite dinner party conversation. Boisterous, argumentative, stubborn and, most frustratingly, often right, he had a way of making his views — often about politics and religion — known using the most efficient of language, never giving a damn what anybody else thought of them. Although he died this past December after a bout of esophageal cancer, his memory lives on, as do his numerous debates via YouTube and several of his books.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Changes could be coming to Alabama’s tough immigration law that has been challenged by the courts, churches and businesses.

Its author, Republican Rep. Micky Hammon, on Thursday offered revisions that he said would make the law more workable for local governments, more enforceable for police, and less burdensome for law-abiding citizens and businesses. It also addresses sections that courts have put on hold.
