On a team ranked No. 2 in the country, it can be difficult to stand out. Senior swimmer Neil Caskey has done this and more for the Longhorns all season long.

Caskey has dominated the competition this season, winning at least one event in every meet except one. To those closest to the team this comes as no surprise.

As if things couldn’t get any tougher for the Longhorns, now they have to prepare for a battle against one of the most storied programs in college basketball, No. 7 Kansas.

Coming from a heartbreaking loss to Kansas State marred with turnovers, Texas dropped to 2-3 in Big 12 play while Kansas is fresh off a victory against the third best team in the country, Baylor. Everyone knows head coach Rick Barnes is dealing with a young squad, but the expected growing pains are really starting to hurt.

The learning curve for this Texas basketball team (12-5, 2-2 Big 12) is steep considering the light-years ahead the elite Big 12 teams are in terms of experience and size, and assistant coach Chris Ogden knows it.

“Offensively we haven’t been very good and it has cost us some games, we think,” Ogden said. “And its a lot of different factors. It’s no one player or no one person. When you’re young like this it takes a little longer.”

What happens here won’t change the world. But it could change yours.

The Longhorn Wrestling Club is a place that offers more than wrestling. Despite a short existence, it has already made an impact.

“The program has been around for six years,” said president John DeMis. “We’ve won four state titles and finished in the top four of our division every year.”

Last weekend, fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field roared as Corey Knebel ripped the final pitch that popped up safely to center field and secured the Longhorns a 4-2 win and a trip to the College World Series. As ESPN cameras showed Knebel thrust a triumphant fist pump toward home plate, the Georgetown native’s friends at home saw someone they didn’t recognize.

TULSA, Okla. — Every time the video montage is played prior to a Texas home game, someone will either glance over at assistant coach Kenton Paulino and smile or give him a little nudge.

One of the highlights that plays on the Frank Erwin Center screen is Paulino’s game winning buzzer-beater against West Virginia to send Texas to the Elite Eight in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

“I can watch it over and over again,” Paulino said. “I don’t think it will ever get old.”

In what was their last chance to prove their worth to the NCAA selection committee, the Longhorns couldn’t make it past the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships, as they fell to a well-rested Aggie squad 77 to 50 Wednesday night.

“The body of work has been done,” said assistant coach LaKale Malone. “Do we wish we could go back and change a little? Yes, but we have fought and fought this season.”

Texas football lost a pioneer Thursday with the passing of Emory Bellard, 83, after his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Regarded as the father of the famed wishbone offense, Bellard found success in every capacity. He played football for the Longhorns in the 1950s, then became an assistant coach for his alma mater. At Texas, Bellard invented the widely-successful wishbone rushing attack, which the Longhorns rode to two national championships with Bellard on staff. Bellard then went on to become the head coach at Texas A&M and Mississippi State.

The Texas women’s swimming and diving team is peaking at the perfect time.

Wednesday night’s 77-60 victory over Houston made it three in a row for the Longhorns, who appear to have put consecutive mid-season losses to Auburn and Georgia behind them.

The Longhorns were in top form as they took 13 of 17 events from the Cougars in the annual Sprint for the Cure meet at the University of Houston Natatorium.

“This was a great team effort,” Texas assistant coach Jim Henry said.

It has been a difficult year for the UT club hockey team. For assistant coach Jim White, the battles that take place on the ice have taken a backseat.

While the Longhorns have faced off against North Texas, UTSA and Texas A&M this season, White has been forced to deal with a more difficult opponent: cancer. His battle with kidney cancer has impacted his team more than any game could.

Jerry Gray was aware that a higher power might be trying to tell him something.

The Seattle Seahawks opened the preseason against the Tennessee Titans this year where, as the Seahawks’ defensive backs coach, Gray saw former Longhorn safety Michael Griffin in action. Two weeks later, the Seahawks played the Minnesota Vikings and cornerback Cedric Griffin. A week later, they finished the preseason against the Oakland Raiders and safety Michael Huff.

“That was probably a sign,” Gray said.

The team has an excellent chance of making the Big 12 playoffs, which requires that they stay in the top eight in standings. The Longhorns hope to improve their seed this weekend.
Last season, Texas lost to Oklahoma State, 1-0, and beat OU in overtime, 2-1.

This Saturday, the Longhorns will take part in the Princeton Invitational and Concordia Invite in Cedar Park.

While the matches won’t be filled with top teams, they are equally important to helping assistant coach John Hayes accomplish his goals.
