The Daily Texan sat down with associate professor Ben Carrington to discuss a variety of topics, including UT’s slow integration process to the Rooney Rule, to what the University athletic department can do to separate itself as a beacon of diversity. Carrington’s research interests include the politics of race and sport, African diaspora studies, masculinity and national identity formation and the nature of cultural resistance within the arena of popular culture.
Editor's note: This story is the first in a series exploring race, racism and diversity on the UT campus.
Two UT students aim to challenge common conceptions about young Latino men in college during their time on the 40 Acres. Manuel Ramirez, an international relations and global studies freshman, and Josh Pina, a biology freshman, are good friends who made it to UT in very different ways.
The Latino population of the U.S. is estimated at 50.5 million, about 16.3 percent of the population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A finding that a Tennessee judge was high on prescription pills during the last two years of his career is calling into question convictions in many of the criminal cases he handled.
The outcome could overwhelm the court system in Knox County, Tennessee’s third-largest county with cases that must be retried because the judge was high.
Only two teams in women’s college basketball history have made it to the national championship game in back-to-back seasons and lost.
Tonight, Notre Dame could become the third team to suffer a similar fate when it faces undefeated Baylor.
Tennessee did it first in the 1980 and 1981 seasons, and most recently Auburn reached the national championship three straight years in 1988-1990 and lost each time. Sure it’s elite company, but it’s not exactly what a program wants to be remembered for.
If Rick Barnes’ salary determined how his team would perform, the Longhorns may have had a spot in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, rather than a first round bow out to Cincinnati.
Like 8 percent of the American public, Vince Young now knows what its like to be unemployed.
Young was the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and is a two-time Pro Bowler.
But now this Texas legend is looking for a job as an unrestricted free agent. His stock has seemed to gradually drop since his 2008 season with the Titans.
NASHVILLE, TENN. — The Longhorns struggled all season to win close games, and that’s why Texas will watch the rest of the NCAA Tournament from home.
The Longhorns’ season ended Friday with a 65-59 loss to Cincinnati at Bridgestone Arena in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was Texas’ (20-14) ninth loss by six points or fewer.
“We’re always going to be in close games and we have to find a way to finish,” said UT head coach Rick Barnes. “We had chances 10 or 14 times this year and we didn’t.”
WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney split six states and dueled in an almost impossibly close race in Ohio on a Super Tuesday that stretched from one end of the country to the other in the most turbulent Republican presidential race in a generation.
A resurgent Santorum broke through in primaries in Oklahoma and Tennessee and in the North Dakota caucuses, raising fresh doubts about Romney’s ability to corral the votes of conservatives in some of the most Republican states in the country.
The Tennessee Titans have tagged safety Michael Griffin as their franchise player.
The Titans announced the move Monday a couple hours before the NFL deadline to use the tag.
The move to tag Griffin still allows the Titans to work on a long-term contract before July 16 with the safety who was their first-round draft pick in 2007 out of Texas. Griffin was due to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13.
Texas didn’t get swept this past weekend like it did by Stanford earlier this season, but the remainder of the Houston College Classic did not go particularly well for the Longhorns.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Intensifying debate over conservative social values — and Republican icon Rush Limbaugh — overshadowed the nation’s economic concerns Sunday as the Republican presidential campaign hurtled toward Super Tuesday contests that could re-shape the nomination battle and shift the direction of the Grand Old Party.
Texas' weekend at the Houston College Classic started out well with an upset win over No. 5 Rice on Friday, but the rest of the three game set didn't go as planned.
No. 21 Texas (4-7) dropped its next game 5-4 to an unranked Tennessee (8-2) squad after its late inning rally came up short, and on Sunday Texas fell to another SEC team, No. 4 Arkansas.
The No. 8 Texas Longhorns, who have muscled through the early part of their schedule, are set to face what may be their biggest challenge of the season so far this weekend.
When mother of two Tina Leonard sits down at her computer in her home office, she weaves lavish tales of whirlwind romances and passionate nights of lovemaking.
The rain caused a few issues for the Longhorns this weekend, but none of those problems were on the field. The No. 13 ranked Texas team only played two out of five scheduled games in the Time Warner Texas Invitational. Of those two games, however, the Longhorns proved too strong for their opponents.
Texas was scheduled to play two games on Friday, the first being against 10th ranked Tennessee and the other against Pittsburgh. While the game against the Lady Volunteers was cancelled due to the inclement weather, Texas did take the field against the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Angela Kelly has seen many years of success in soccer that fit well with the ideology and desire to win that exists at Texas. Kelly, who comes to the Forty Acres after 12 years with the Tennessee Volunteers, was named the head coach of the women’s team this past December. She is replacing former head coach Chris Petrucelli, who has been reassigned following 13 years at the helm.
With a couple upset losses and a shocking conference victory, the presents under the Christmas tree weren’t the only surprises for the Texas women’s basketball team this holiday season.
The Longhorns couldn’t have asked for a better start to the break as they bounced back from a tough loss at Tennessee to defeat the Michigan State Spartans in the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge.
The Houston Texans dropped their last game against the Panthers, and with it came a much needed knock back down to reality for Texans fans who were ready to buy Super Bowl tickets. Houston achieved its first playoff berth by tackling each game one at a time, and will have to continue to do so as the season wears on. With as many injuries as its sustained, however, doing so will require an especially inspired effort from the few players the Texans have left.

The first two rounds of the tournament saw five upsets — leaving three Big 10 teams in the dust. Nebraska, the No. 2 overall seed with one of the largest volleyball fan bases in the country, fell to Kansas State in five sets. Ohio State defeated No. 14 seed Tennessee and will now face No. 3 seed Illinois in the Sweet 16.
Michigan upset No. 11 seed Stanford and will now take on Florida, who upset No. 6 seed Northern Iowa.
After winning its last five games Texas was unable to pull off an upset over the Lady Volunteers this weekend in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Lady Volunteers were lead by Shekinna Stricklen who scored 20 points and Vicki Baugh who added 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Volunteers converted 16 points off of 16 Texas turnovers and out-rebouned Texas 49-38 while scoring 17 second-chance points.
After playing overmatched opponents in their last two games, the Longhorns head to California this weekend to take on a college basketball powerhouse in UCLA.
Although, it’s not what it used to be.
The Longhorns are heating up and their timing couldn’t be any better.
Texas has now won five consecutive games, including a come-from-behind victory over California this past weekend to clinch the Waikiki Rainbow Wahine Showdown Championship in Honolulu.
The team is expecting more of the same heading into Sunday’s match up against the No. 8 Tennessee Lady Volunteers (3-2) in Knoxville.
Maybe a change of scenery was all the Longhorns needed to get things going this season.
After a tough loss to fifth-ranked Stanford in its season opener, Texas has reeled off four straight wins.
In its first two games in the Waikiki Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Hawaii, Texas defeated Virginia and California.
