Since Title IX’s inception, the landscape of college athletics has transformed immensely. The legislation, which prohibited sexual discrimination at educational institutions, has not only given female athletes the chance to play at the collegiate level, but has also opened doors for the rest of their lives.

Although it took a little while and some patience, three Longhorns were selected in the NFL Draft on Saturday — the final day of the draft.

Keenan Robinson, a linebacker, was the first to hear his name called. Robinson was picked by Washington in the fourth round, 119th overall.

It wasn’t how the Longhorns wanted to start their final series with longtime rival Texas A&M. Thursday night gave the team a lot of trouble, as they lost in a 9-0 shut out given by the Aggies.

No. 18 Texas A&M held the Longhorns to seven hits on the night, and the Aggies were able to get 9 runs of their eight hits. The run-ruled game was not what the Longhorns expected going into the weekend.

The Longhorns’ football team is 13-12 over the last two years. The Texas men’s basketball team has won exactly one NCAA Tournament game in the last three. It’s been eight years since the Longhorns’ women’s basketball squad has gotten past the second round in the NCAA Tournament.

But the way Texas has played against Texas A&M recently has been anything but mediocre.

At the beginning of the season, Texas was off to a poor start. It featured a five game losing streak which included a sweep at the hands of the Cardinal in which their lowest single game run output was higher than Texas’ three game total. It wasn’t the most desirable start for a team that was coming off its record 34th College World Series appearance.

Texas traveled to Lubbock this weekend looking for its third conference win, but instead came back with their third conference loss.

No. 22 Texas Tech handed the No. 15 ranked Longhorns a 4-3 loss to wrap up conference play ahead of the conference tournament this weekend. With the loss, Texas will have the number four seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting up a rematch with Texas A&M.

Coming off its third consecutive event victory, the Texas Longhorns men’s golf team will look to extend its win streak to four this weekend at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan.

No. 1 Texas will head a field of 10 teams at the two-day event, which begins on Saturday and finishes on Sunday. Also in attendance will be a number of other Big 12 schools, including Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech and host Texas A&M.

It seems as if the 2011-12 year is the year of the Bear, because in the world of sports, Baylor cannot be stopped.

Baylor’s football team won 10 games while Robert Griffin III brought the school its first Heisman trophy. Its men’s basketball team made the elite eight and the women’s basketball team was a perfect 40-0 en route to a national title. Now their baseball team is ranked in the top 10 in the country and is undefeated in conference play.

The Longhorns found their way back to the win column this weekend. After struggling for a few games, Texas swept their three game series against Kansas.

The Texas offense proved too tough for the Jayhawks as they scored 32 runs over the three games. The Longhorns tallied a total of 24 hits in the series and gave up 23. With 12 games left in their 2012 season, the team, led by senior Lexy Bennett, bumped their record to 35-5 and 9-3 in conference play.

More has happened to the Longhorns in these past three games than in the first 34 games. Three losses in the last three games isn’t what they expected, and as the No. 5 ranked team travels to Kansas for a three-game series, they definitely wanted a better start to April.

UT is an athletic powerhouse. Its teams are consistently ranked on the national level; as a result, the personnel coaching them is some of the best-paid in the country. But with budget cuts left and right and higher education receiving the brunt of the impact, one must wonder: Are these salaries truly justified? After all, Mack Brown, the highest paid coach in college sports, brings in almost $5.2 million annually before bonuses and incentives.

It’s back on the road once again for the Longhorns. After a disappointing home stand against the Missouri Tigers, Texas travels up-state to Lubbock for a one game stand against Texas Tech.

While it wasn’t the way the Longhorns wanted to end the weekend, the two losses to Missouri came as a learning experience and sparked a realization that they have areas to improve on. Texas’ offense has produced only four runs in the last two games of the series while giving up 13.

The Texas offense was limited in action in its first set of conference losses all season.

The pitching staff on Saturday for No. 11 Missouri proved to be just as daunting for the Longhorn bats this weekend as they were last season. The No. 3 Longhorns were held to a season low of four runs in two games as they lost the final two games of the three-game series against the Tigers this Easter weekend.

The losses also marked the first home defeats of the 2012 season.
