Freshman pitcher Ricky Jacquez was dismissed from the team on Monday after a second violation of an undisclosed team policy, the school announced.
Jacquez was scheduled to start Sunday May 6 at Missouri but was a late scratch after he became sick on the mound during his warmup pitches. He was also inactive during the entire April 20-22 series against Kansas.
Texas starting pitcher Parker French will miss the remainder of the season after he suffered a stress fracture in his right elbow last Friday against Missouri. He will be able to resume throwing in two months.
The freshman has proven to be a key member of the pitching rotation for the Longhorns, recently earning the starting spot on Friday. French is 6-2 with a 2.84 ERA on the year and has used an effective sinker to keep opposing batters on their toes all season long.

As I write this column on Thursday (yesterday), the sports office of The Daily Texan, as I’ve known it for the last four years, has remained relatively unchanged. The red couch with pillows bursting at the seams still festers with the stench of sweaty writers who plop on the couch regularly after coming back from some availability or another to furiously file a story. The small tube TV sitting on top of a ruddy filing cabinet is still missing the power button and the remote only functions when you hold it at just the right angle from just the right distance.
Streaming from the dugout, teammates raced towards Jordan Etier and moments later a massive pile of humanity engulfed him at first base, celebrating Etier’s game winning at bat against Texas A&M last Sunday.
It wasn’t the at bat itself that was so special — just a simple ground ball at the first baseman, and barely far enough up the line to score the runner from third.
The season is coming to a close, but there’s still plenty of work to come. The Longhorns travel north to Norman, Okla. to battle rival Oklahoma, as they look to finish the season strong.
There has always been stiff competition between these two powerhouses. Overall, their series is tied at 21 games apiece. While the Longhorns are winning the series at home, it is a different story on the road. Oklahoma is 9-5 against Texas in its home stadium, but the Longhorns hope to decrease that gap.
The two-time defending American League Champions Texas Rangers continue to prove that they are a premier franchise. They hold the best record in this early baseball season and their farm system ranks amongst the top in the majors.
It’s no surprise that their AAA affiliate Round Rock Express features a roster with players that could probably suit up for numerous other Major League teams.
After losing all three of its starting pitchers from a year ago, Texas’ rotation has fluctuated over the course of the season.
The Daily Texan sat down with associate professor Ben Carrington to discuss a variety of topics, including UT’s slow integration process to the Rooney Rule, to what the University athletic department can do to separate itself as a beacon of diversity. Carrington’s research interests include the politics of race and sport, African diaspora studies, masculinity and national identity formation and the nature of cultural resistance within the arena of popular culture.
For the second straight game, the Longhorns came back to beat A&M.
The Longhorns were able to tame the bear this time around. After losing their first game of the series to conference rival Baylor, the Longhorns took this second game with ease on Tuesday night.
In the 7-3 win, Texas proved how strong of a team it is. While giving up seven hits and hitting 11 themselves, they were able to out power Baylor late in the game.
Mark Payton made it on base at least once during each of Texas’ first 33 games. Although that streak has ended, his consistency and good timing brought the Longhorns back in the game on Tuesday night when they were down 2-1 to Prairie View A&M.
SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker scored 18 points and the San Antonio Spurs handed Utah its second-worst playoff loss in franchise history, beating the Jazz 114-83 on Wednesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series.
NBA Coach of the Year Gregg Popovich practically put the Spurs on autopilot after a 20-0 run in the second quarter that stunned the Jazz, who had vowed to play better after the Spurs easily won Game 1. But this humiliating rout was even easier.
Everyone remembers the player that breaks the color barrier.
But what of the coach? The most famous African-American to defy a color barrier in the world of sports is the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson. For the Texas football program, it’s Julius Whittier, a lineman who became the first black Longhorns football player in 1970.
Since Title IX’s inception, the landscape of college athletics has transformed immensely. The legislation, which prohibited sexual discrimination at educational institutions, has not only given female athletes the chance to play at the collegiate level, but has also opened doors for the rest of their lives.
Title IX was a controversial amendment passed in 1972 that provided women with equal opportunities in the education system.
It reads, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity.” The actual wording of the amendment does not specifically mention college athletics but its “intent” has been applied to sports by ensuring equal participation including equal number of sports and scholarships for men and women.
After a 66-game sprint in a four-month span, the NBA has reached its postseason and many teams are already marred by injuries. The heavy schedule and lack of off-season preparations seem to be taking their toll on key players. No team was hit harder by this wave of injuries than the No. 1 overall seed Chicago Bulls.
Following Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa’s reversal on the decision to cancel a high-profile boxing event in El Paso, the border town’s City Council is set to vote today on whether or not to approve a renegotiated contract with Top Rank about the fight set to happen on June 16.
Russell Westbrook scored 29 points, Kevin Durant added 26 in an off-shooting performance and the Oklahoma City Thunder clawed out a 102-99 victory over defending champion Dallas on Monday night to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round playoff series.
Durant hit two free throws with 50.4 seconds left to give Oklahoma City a 98-97 lead, and James Harden hit four more foul shots to close it out for the Thunder.
Texas fans rejoiced euphorically on Dec. 6, 1969, as the Longhorns defeated Arkansas, 15-14, in the national championship game.
It was a game that would long be celebrated for what the Longhorns had accomplished on the field, but history was also being made among the members of the team itself.
After sweeping Texas A&M the previous weekend, the Bears took a break from conference play this week to take on No. 25 New Mexico State for a two game set.
After a couple tough outings last month, it seemed like Corey Knebel couldn’t handle pitching more than an inning or two at a time.
The Longhorns won the series with the Aggies on Sunday.
Despite losing 9-0 Thursday night in a run-ruled game on the road in College Station, the Longhorns fought from behind and pulled off back to back wins to take their final series against the Aggies 2-1
this past weekend.
The No. 7 Longhorns beat the Aggies twice at home, 7-6 on Saturday and 4-3 on Sunday. They are now 39-8 on the season and 13-6 in Big 12 Conference play.
