CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — President Barack Obama went after the college vote Tuesday, pitching cheaper student loans as he courted the one age group where he has a decided advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney. The twist? Romney, too, has endorsed the idea, though it’s unclear whether deficit-leery Republicans in Congress will go along.

Building a cabin helps rebuild a relationship, at least in the case of couple Beth Tacular and Phil Moore of the band Bowerbirds. After a rough patch of restless touring and personal turmoil, the North Carolina-based band reconvened to bring a third LP to fruition.

With an unconventional background of having met near a dumpster behind a Whole Foods Market and recording an album in a small house built during the Reconstruction era, the folk ensemble has flourished to finally find steady success.

Two Big 12 teams faced top-level basketball programs in the Elite 8 round of the NCAA tournament this weekend. Second-seed Kansas and third-seed Baylor entered as technical underdogs in their match ups — though Kansas was given the slight edge by Las Vegas due to injuries on the Tar heel squad — and both teams put up a fight, but the results were mixed.

The best thing Texas has going for it is the strength and depth of the Big 12. The Longhorns play in one of the top conferences in the nation and held their own with a 9-9 record in league play.

The Big 12 is the only conference with three teams with a .800 win percentage or higher (Kansas, Missouri, Baylor). It is also the only league with half of its teams having fewer than 10 losses (KU, MU, BU, Iowa State, Kansas State).

For the first time in six seasons, the Longhorns have cracked the top 10 of the ITA women’s college tennis poll. Coming off a win at Clemson, the women have vaulted up six spots to become No. 9 in the country.

This season has had its ups, as well as its downs, as the Longhorns carry a 4-3 record into their next match.

The team has earned victories against North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Clemson, all of whom have been ranked in the ITA top 20 this season. Their three losses have come against top 10 foes Georgia, Virginia and Miami.

WASHINGTON — Democrats are playing defense in governors’ races in 2012, protecting eight seats — some in conservative states like North Carolina and Montana — while Republicans are safeguarding just four. But one of those is in Wisconsin, where a recall effort against incumbent Scott Walker has emerged as a national test of the confrontational measures many GOP governors have taken to balance state budgets.

Texas’ leading hitter last season can’t recall what his batting average was in 2011.

“I don’t really remember. I’m not sure, but I think it ended up somewhere in the .340s,” said Longhorns third baseman Erich Weiss, a .348 hitter a year ago. “I hope it turns out to be better this year than last year. But I’m just going to do whatever I can to help the team win. I’m not going to try to be selfish.”

While most students packed up and headed home for the holiday break, the Longhorns played seven games.

Texas went undefeated at home, beating Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Rice and Temple. Still, the Longhorns were winless on the road with an ugly loss in North Carolina, and defeats to Iowa State and Missouri. But a 4-3 record isn’t the worst way to spend the holidays.

With six freshman and just two seniors, Texas played like a young team: defensive lapses, stagnant offense, bad turnovers. The Longhorns, though, also dazzled at times.

It was revenge for No. 6 North Carolina and a sad dose of reality for the Longhorns who were undersized and outmatched in Wednesday night’s 82-63 loss.

Led by Harrison Barnes’ 26 point 10 rebound performance, the Tarheels controlled the entirety of the game with their size and experience en route to their fifth straight win while simultaneously exorcising the demons of last year’s loss to Texas (9-3). North Carolina built a double digit lead by way of a 13-1 run in the first half and never looked back.

Texas struggled a bit in its first road trip this season, falling to Oregon State 100-95 in overtime Saturday night. But with a team that counts six freshmen among its key players, that’s not too surprising.

The Longhorns (2-1) held a lead over the Beavers for the majority of the game, including a 72-64 advantage with a little more than seven minutes left. But behind Jared Cunningham, who scored 37 points, the Beavers came roaring back. Cunningham made two free throws to send the game into overtime and then, after OSU made two three-pointers, made two more.

For the 10th season in a row, the Longhorns have started the season 2-0. After two convincing home wins, Texas now heads to East Rutherford, N.J., to compete in the championship rounds of the TicketCity Legends Classic. Texas will play Oregon State on Saturday evening in the IZOD Center, the former home of the New Jersey Nets. Since Texas was selected as a regional host for the tournament, it will automatically advance no matter the result against the Beavers. North Carolina State and Vanderbilt also played host and will advance as well.
