The season is coming to a close, but there’s still plenty of work to come. The Longhorns travel north to Norman, Okla. to battle rival Oklahoma, as they look to finish the season strong.
There has always been stiff competition between these two powerhouses. Overall, their series is tied at 21 games apiece. While the Longhorns are winning the series at home, it is a different story on the road. Oklahoma is 9-5 against Texas in its home stadium, but the Longhorns hope to decrease that gap.
After losing all three of its starting pitchers from a year ago, Texas’ rotation has fluctuated over the course of the season.
At the beginning of the season, Texas was off to a poor start. It featured a five game losing streak which included a sweep at the hands of the Cardinal in which their lowest single game run output was higher than Texas’ three game total. It wasn’t the most desirable start for a team that was coming off its record 34th College World Series appearance.
Editor’s Note: This is the fourth in an eight-part series about Longhorns hoping to be drafted into the NFL.
There was a lot to like about last season. Texas won three more games than it did the year before, including a bowl game, and signed another top-five recruiting class. But Fozzy Whittaker’s knee injury was probably the lowest point.
Despite a few hiccups during the past two weeks that have handed the Longhorns twice as many losses as they had amassed all season, Texas still sits as one of the top college programs in the country.
This weekend the No 5. Longhorns will have a chance to avenge recent losses to Baylor and Missouri with a home series against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Texas is currently 35-6 on the season and 9-4 in Big 12 play.

The Longhorns found their way back to the win column this weekend. After struggling for a few games, Texas swept their three game series against Kansas.
The Texas offense proved too tough for the Jayhawks as they scored 32 runs over the three games. The Longhorns tallied a total of 24 hits in the series and gave up 23. With 12 games left in their 2012 season, the team, led by senior Lexy Bennett, bumped their record to 35-5 and 9-3 in conference play.
She’s not one of the big names on the Longhorn roster and she doesn’t normally make headlines. She’s not one of the players who holds multiple school, conference and national records, and she is not often recognized for her talents on the field. But without Torie Schmidt covering left field and her left-handed stance at the plate, the Longhorns would be at a huge disadvantage.
It’s back on the road once again for the Longhorns. After a disappointing home stand against the Missouri Tigers, Texas travels up-state to Lubbock for a one game stand against Texas Tech.
While it wasn’t the way the Longhorns wanted to end the weekend, the two losses to Missouri came as a learning experience and sparked a realization that they have areas to improve on. Texas’ offense has produced only four runs in the last two games of the series while giving up 13.
The Texas offense was limited in action in its first set of conference losses all season.
The pitching staff on Saturday for No. 11 Missouri proved to be just as daunting for the Longhorn bats this weekend as they were last season. The No. 3 Longhorns were held to a season low of four runs in two games as they lost the final two games of the three-game series against the Tigers this Easter weekend.
The losses also marked the first home defeats of the 2012 season.

With very low production from the offense, Texas scored only four runs in their last two games while Missouri scored 13. However, Texas offense generated hits, 17 total in the two games, but the Tiger defense proved tough in the field, especially the pitching.
If there’s one thing the Longhorns can say they definitely have, it’s leadership. The 32-2 team exudes composure not only from their seniors but from all of their players.
The Longhorns have a total of eight upperclassmen, including three seniors. All are important leaders on and off the field. While it is great to have veteran leaders, the younger players from Texas are also learning to take the reigns.
The game started out slowly for the first time all season, but the Longhorns scraped together five runs in the fifth inning to come out with the 9-5 win over the Missouri Tigers in game one of a three game series.
While a good, strong non-conference schedule is important in developing the skills of any team in a top conference, a season’s real success is based on the final conference record.
The No. 3 Longhorns have proved that they are a talented ball club. In 33 games, the 2012 squad has proven 31 times that they can contend, only twice coming up short to the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked ball clubs. The Longhorns 31-2 record includes a 5-0 Big 12 record so far this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Even expert storm chases would have struggled to decipher the difference between the tornado warnings sent last May before severe weather hit Joplin and, a few days later, headed again toward downtown Kansas City.
The first tornado was a massive EF-5 twister that killed 161 people as it wiped out a huge chunk of the southwest Missouri community. The second storm caused only minor damage when two weak tornadoes struck in the Kansas City suburbs.
