LOS ANGELES — A would-be Canadian Miss Universe contestant who was born male said Tuesday that a rule requiring contestants to be born as women should be dropped, whether or not she gets a chance to compete.

“I do not want any other woman to suffer the discrimination that I have endured,” said Jenna Talackova, who underwent a sex change four years ago.

Her attorney, Gloria Allred, displayed a copy of Talackova’s passport, which lists her as female, as do her birth certificate and driver’s license.

LOS ANGELES — Former President George H.W. Bush plans to endorse Mitt Romney at an event Thursday in Houston.

Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho says the two will appear together and speak to reporters.

Formal backing from the 41st president is another sign that the Republican Party is uniting behind Romney as pressure builds on challengers Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich to leave the race.

With a successful 2012 indoor season under their belts, members of Texas’ men’s track and field team seek to continue the trend as they dual the UCLA Bruins at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. this weekend.

The No. 7 Longhorns will kick off their outdoor season with a select group of athletes. Texas is coming off strong performances in the NCAA Indoor Championships with eight athletes receiving All-American honors.

LOS ANGELES — A senior administrator at Claremont McKenna College resigned after acknowledging that he falsified college entrance exam scores for years to publications responsible for ranking the small school among universities, an official said.

An investigation was launched after inaccuracies were detected in the SAT scores reported for the class entering in fall 2011, college president Pamela B. Gann told staff members and students in an email message on Monday.

The Largo on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles was a magical place — a small hole in the wall with terrible food, no comfortable seats and filthy restrooms that somehow managed to attract impressive talent in both music and comedy. For a minimal cover charge, patrons could see performances by the likes of Elliott Smith, Andrew Bird, Nickel Creek, Zach Galifianakis or Tenacious D, among others, in an intimate 100-person theater.

UT alumnus Marlane Barnes only had a vague idea of what the “Twilight Saga” was about before she went in to audition for an opportunity many would kill for: a part in “Breaking Dawn,” the fourth installment of the saga.

Officials gave her the scene and put her on tape ­— the audition took 30 seconds. Three days later, Barnes found out she got the job.
