Editor's note: A 30 column is a chance for departing permanent staff to say farewell and reflect on their time spent in The Daily Texan’s basement office. The term comes from the old typesetting mark (-30-) to denote the end of a line.

Upon entering college I thought I should be a broadcast journalism major. Then I realized a week into my freshman year that I missed having a pressing newspaper deadline looming over my head, and so I applied to the University Star.
The what?

Streaming from the dugout, teammates raced towards Jordan Etier and moments later a massive pile of humanity engulfed him at first base, celebrating Etier’s game winning at bat against Texas A&M last Sunday.

It wasn’t the at bat itself that was so special — just a simple ground ball at the first baseman, and barely far enough up the line to score the runner from third.

Each night the Tower glows with orange or white light, depending on the day’s events and successes, but tonight the Tower will only glow in the moonlight in order to commemorate members of the UT community who Longhorns have said goodbye to this past year.

The Longhorns were able to tame the bear this time around. After losing their first game of the series to conference rival Baylor, the Longhorns took this second game with ease on Tuesday night.

In the 7-3 win, Texas proved how strong of a team it is. While giving up seven hits and hitting 11 themselves, they were able to out power Baylor late in the game.

Growing up, I was taught to work harder because I was a black female and things wouldn’t be handed to me. I knew that people wouldn’t want to see me succeed because of the color of my skin. My mom told me at a very young age that I was different because I was black, but I needed to be proud of my culture and my ancestors who fought so that I could have a better life.

LONDON — A committee of British lawmakers called Rupert Murdoch unfit to run his global media empire — a finding that reflects just how deeply the phone hacking scandal born of his defunct News of the World has shaken the relationship between the press and politics.

The divisive ruling Tuesday against Murdoch, his son James and three of their executives also exposed the waning influence of the media tycoon, and could jeopardize his control of a major broadcaster.

Last fall, while trying to book gigs for his nameless band and juggle hours of practice at the Butler School of Music, music business sophomore Josh Delgado gave what seemed to be a harmless answer to the man recording their demo, who asked what the band’s name was.

“Oh, it’s in the works,” Delgado said. At his answer, the man immediately declared, “That’s it,” and In The Works was born.

Jonathan Franzen’s new collection of essays and speeches, “Farther Away,” is an uneven one. Much of it is marred by the writer’s excessive crankiness or weighed down by literary criticism of obscure novels. Nonetheless, at several points, his characteristic brilliance shines through.

A final round rally was not enough to propel the Longhorns to a first place finish on Sunday. Texas finished in second place at the Big 12 Conference Championship tournament.

No. 1 Texas, which entered the last day nine shots back of No. 15 Texas A&M, led the field with a 3-over-291 on the last day of the tournament, but an overall score of 16-over-1168 left the Longhorns in second place, three shots behind the event-winning Aggies.

Resiliency has been the motto for the Longhorns all year. The motto for the Big 12 Championship will be no different.

The team has won the Big 12 tournament title seven times, with its most recent victory coming in 2005. Coming off a loss in its final regular season matchup, the fourth seeded Longhorns will earn a first round bye before looking for redemption against the fifth seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys, who handed them that loss.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas man was executed Thursday for his role in a 2002 robbery in which three people were shot, one fatally.

The lethal injection of Beunka Adams, 29, was carried out less than three hours after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-day appeal to postpone the punishment, the fifth this year in Texas.

Adams expressed love to his family and apologized to witnesses, including one of the women who survived the attack and relatives of the man who was killed.

He said he was a stupid kid in a man’s body at the time of the crime.

After finishing conference play with their third loss, the Longhorns look to bounce back with a win in the conference tournament this weekend against a familiar foe.

No. 18 Texas will take on the host team, No. 34 ranked Texas A&M, in the second match today in College Station. The Longhorns are the No. 4 seed, while the Aggies hold the No. 5 tournament seed.

Should Texas win this match, they will face the No. 1 seeded Oklahoma on Saturday. The Sooners took the match against the Longhorns by a 5-2 count at the end of March.

In yesterday’s Daily Texan, the Texan sports opinion staff informed readers that they could pass on the first 20 minutes of the draft. Hopefully you tuned in soon after because Radio City Music Hall got pretty interesting on Thursday night.
Three surprising top-10 trades shook up the draft. But at the end of the night, Trent Richardson landed in Cleveland, Justin Blackmon went to Jacksonville and Morris Clairborne ended up in Dallas.

Oh yeah, Andrew Luck was selected by the Colts first and Robert Griffin III was chosen by the Redskins with the second pick.
