Rochelle Rae is an artist of many mediums. With a degree in fine arts and experience as a painter and graphic designer, she ventured into a new world of art when she launched her Austin business Rae Cosmetics in August of 2006.
After meeting a friend who worked as a makeup artist, Rae’s interest in cosmetics ultimately led her to the prestigious Make-up Designory in Hollywood. There, Rae swapped her paintbrushes for makeup brushes and embraced a new canvas: a human one.
The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health awarded the Ima Hogg Scholarship for Mental Health to social work graduate student Steven Smith and four students from other Texas universities Monday.
Foundation spokeswoman Merrell Foote said two students from each of the 12 accredited graduate social work programs in Texas can apply for the $5,000 scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 1956, when Ima Hogg created it to attract students to mental health careers.
After two years of decline, charitable giving rose in 2010, and a UT administrator said donations to UT recovered even more quickly.
Charitable giving increased 2.1 percent last year after a 13 percent decline following the 2008 recession, according to a report by the Giving USA Foundation. The foundation announced that contributors, including individuals, corporations and foundations, donated approximately $290.89 billion in charitable contributions in 2010, an increase from $280.30 billion in 2009.
