Executive director of the UT Autism Project, Pamela Buchanan, said she has always had a passion to do something worthwhile while engaging in community service.

Buchanan received the outstanding faculty/staff volunteer award at the 2012 Tower Award ceremony Wednesday evening. Buchanan has worked with families dealing with autism for 15 years, and co-founded UTAP seven years ago. UTAP pairs an autistic child one-to-one with a UT student who becomes his or her parent, guardian and safety net, Buchanan said.

After two semesters and a summer of planning, a new online African-American UT publication will launch in the fall.

Cheyenne Matthews-Hoffman, editor-in-chief of the publication and a journalism sophomore, said the student organization Black Ink Association is attempting to launch a publication similar to the “The Griot,” which was an African-American print publication at UT in the ’80s and the ’90s.

Students of different sexes may be able to cohabitate in UT residence halls as soon as the fall of 2013. The University Residence Hall Organization, composed of approximately 50 student officers representing all students living on campus, unanimously approved a resolution recommending that the University implement a gender inclusive housing option.

Finance junior John Ramsey, who co-authored the resolution, said results from an earlier survey indicated widespread support among students living on-campus.

If Texas wants to produce enough college certified workers to fill the job market, the state will have to rethink its plan regarding higher education.

According to a study co-authored by Joni Finney, director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Research in Higher Education, 56 percent of jobs in Texas will require postsecondary training by 2018. However, Finney said currently 35 percent of adults over the age of 25 in Texas have an associate degree or higher.

Texas Student Television is hosting a live marathon for 24 hours every day for a week. The marathon started Sunday at midnight and will go on until 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

“The last time TSTV did this was five years ago, so we decided to try it again,” said Derek Lewis, TSTV assistant staff director and journalism senior. “We thought it would be a good way to promote the TSTV brand as well as bring in more advertisers.”

WASHINGTON — A top lawmaker briefed on the investigation into a Secret Service prostitution scandal said more firings could be imminent following the ouster of three agency employees.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw more dismissals and more being forced out sooner rather than later,” Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said Thursday. King is being updated on the investigation by Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan.

“You may see a few more today or tomorrow,” King added.

Kahn, director of “Detention” and producer of music videos like Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Lady Gaga’s “Love Game,” spoke to students Tuesday night after showing his new film in the Student Activity Center.

Filmmakers are calling DogTV a new breed of television — an eight-hour block of on-demand cable TV programming designed to keep your dog relaxed, stimulated and entertained while you are at work.

To get the right footage, cameramen got on their knees and shot low and long. “I shot from the point of view of the dog,” said Gilad Neumann, chief executive officer of DogTV.

In production, they had to mute colors, alter sound and add music specially written for dogs.

Teen bullying is an interesting subject for a documentary, but one that has to be handled with a degree of tact. After all, in the wrong director’s hands, such a film could come off as preachy, or even worse, exploitative. With “Bully,” a documentary that follows a handful of bullied teens through their lives and tries to make sense of it all, director Lee Hirsch falls into both traps once or twice, but mainly focuses on making an emotional plea for change. For the most part, it works.
