Ever since Samuel L. Jackson poked his eye-patched head in for the post-credits stinger in “Iron Man,” audiences have been looking forward to the inevitable “Avengers” movie. In creating this film, Marvel Studios had to launch four separate franchises and establish four superheroes worth caring about in the process. One misstep, and it could have been a disaster. Not only did they do it, they absolutely nailed it.
They rank No. 13 in the nation, hold a flawless conference record and perhaps have multiple All-Big 12 performers.
At this point, the Longhorns have proven that they are one of the best tennis teams in the country and one of the best athletics groups on campus. Following two dominating victories against Kansas and Kansas State, the team is in a good position in the Big 12.
“The girls really stepped up and played well,” head coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. “It was great to see them perform that well. We just need to stay fresh and focused.”
SANFORD, Fla. — Tensions are rising in Sanford as a special prosecutor nears a decision on whether to charge George Zimmerman with killing Trayvon Martin.
Someone shot up an unoccupied police car Monday night as it sat outside the neighborhood where Martin was killed.
And a demonstration by college students closed the town’s police station earlier in the day.
Robert Pollard is writing songs so fast that it’s nearly impossible to keep up. As the leader of Dayton, Ohio’s recently-reformed Guided By Voices, he’s put out 17 full-length albums and 16 EPs since 1986’s Forever Since Breakfast, which include indie-rock classics like Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. As a solo artist, he’s released 18 LPs.
If there’s one thing the Longhorns can say they definitely have, it’s leadership. The 32-2 team exudes composure not only from their seniors but from all of their players.
The Longhorns have a total of eight upperclassmen, including three seniors. All are important leaders on and off the field. While it is great to have veteran leaders, the younger players from Texas are also learning to take the reigns.
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A Marine facing dismissal from the military for his Facebook comments went as far as posting superimposed images of President Barack Obama’s face on a donkey, a prosecutor said Thursday.
Prosecutor Capt. John Torresala said the behavior by Marine Sgt. Gary Stein repeatedly violated Pentagon policy limiting the free speech rights of service members. Stein’s security clearance was taken away and he has no future in the Marine Corps because he can’t do his job without that clearance, Torresala said.
Students who want to become effective leaders need to have a drive to succeed and the ability to overcome hardship, said renowned former American astronaut and United States Navy Capt. Mark Kelly in a lecture Monday evening.
Austin Police Department officers responded to a 9-1-1 call Sunday reporting a deceased person in a parking garage near the Dobie Center.
The call was placed at 4:10 p.m. on Sunday reporting a dead body spotted at 2000 Whitis Avenue, said APD spokesman Anthony Hipolito. Hipolito said that the incident is under investigation by homicide detectives from APD.
BAMAKO, Mali — The junior officer who overthrew Mali’s democratically elected leader earlier this month and dissolved the nation’s constitution made a public U-turn Sunday, declaring amid enormous international pressure that he was reinstating the 1992 constitution and planning to hold elections.
SANFORD, Fla. — Before the charges that police botched the investigation of the shooting of an unarmed black teen, there were complaints that they went easy on an officer’s son who beat a black homeless man, or that officers pull over black kids for wearing the wrong color hat because they suspect gang associations.
SANFORD, Fla. — An unarmed black teenager shot to death by a neighborhood watch captain told his girlfriend he was being followed shortly before the confrontation that killed him, a lawyer said Tuesday as federal and state prosecutors announced they would investigate.
“’Oh he’s right behind me, he’s right behind me again,’” 17-year-old Trayvon Martin told his girlfriend on his cellphone, the Martin family’s attorney said.

A construction crew broke a gas line near 39th Street and Jefferson Street on Friday causing the Austin Fire Department to take precautionary measures by evacuating 12 residences, said fire department captain Matt Cox.
Cox said the crew called the fire department as soon as they punctured the 4-6 inch gas line at about 9:30 a.m. in what Cox described as an “old residential area of Austin.”
“They saw that they had broken it as soon as it happened,” Cox said. “They called us right away, and we started evacuating.”
Senior infielder Lexy Bennett is excited to be back on the field. Towards the end of the 2011 regular season, Bennett was forced to watch her team from the bench after a rouge pitch injured her right arm in a game against Iowa State. After turning in a .438 batting average with 57 hits and 41 RBIs last season, the senior’s presence on the field is crucial to the Longhorn’s game plan as they seek to make it to the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The game of Frisbee has always been thought of as a pastime or hobby when a group wants to find something fun to do. Coach Calvin Lin and Texas’ Men’s ultimate team are proving this thought to mean quite the contrary.

Heavy breathes. Tense muscles. Red gloves firmly gripping the star spangled shield. Captain America slowly recovers after deflecting an optic blast from Cyclops.
Cyclops and Captain America will be but two characters caught in a heroic grapple when Marvel releases their Avengers Versus X-Men 12-issue comic series on April 4th.
In recent years, the Longhorns have been known for having a strong team of ranked players and senior leadership. This season, the Longhorns won’t be able to boast that luxury, as they have only one ranked player on a team with six underclassmen and no seniors.
Instead, they will rely on a junior to lead them through a tough schedule against several top 20 teams.
Daniele De Rossi signed a new five-year contract extension yesterday with AS Roma.
On a team ranked No. 2 in the country, it can be difficult to stand out. Senior swimmer Neil Caskey has done this and more for the Longhorns all season long.
Caskey has dominated the competition this season, winning at least one event in every meet except one. To those closest to the team this comes as no surprise.

ROME — “You go on board! Is that clear? Do you hear me?” the Coast Guard officer shouted as the captain of the grounded Costa Concordia sat safe in a life raft and frantic passengers struggled to escape after the ship rammed into a reef off the Tuscan coast.
“It is an order. Don’t make any more excuses. You have declared ‘Abandon ship.’ Now I am in charge.”
In groups of four, members of UT’s Gigglepants improv comedy troupe began creating a scene based off of a word given to them by their peers. They only changed the direction of the scene when specific songs were played, cueing them to either give a monologue, die or find an excuse to touch.
The Longhorns have been nothing short of exceptional as they have won every competition of the year.
The women are making their case as the best team in the nation, winning handily against every opponent placed in front of them.
He stands at 6-foot-5 and 226 pounds. He can hurt a defense with his arm as much as he can with his feet. He will try to run around defenders but doesn’t mind going through them. Remind you of anyone?
The first dual-threat quarterback of that size that would first come to mind for most Longhorns fans is Vince Young. But Kansas State’s Collin Klein reminds Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz of someone else.
