Last fall, while trying to book gigs for his nameless band and juggle hours of practice at the Butler School of Music, music business sophomore Josh Delgado gave what seemed to be a harmless answer to the man recording their demo, who asked what the band’s name was.

“Oh, it’s in the works,” Delgado said. At his answer, the man immediately declared, “That’s it,” and In The Works was born.

There is an infectious charm to local frontwoman Rebecca Butler, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist of her own band, Rebecca Butler and The Richards. The group, who will be opening up for pop songstress Katie Herzig tonight at Stubb’s Jr., is a suitable accompaniment for Monday’s concert. The group finds a medium between Motown-esque catchiness and indie rock bravado, resulting in dance rock euphoria.

Classical Reinvention presented "In Real-Time" on February 22nd at the Butler School of Music, with pieces ranging from Bach to Radiohead. This organization performs classical music reworked with modern influences. Their mission is to "uphold the integrity of the art form while changing aspects of the presentation, concert environment, and of the classical brand on a broader scale."

A year ago, Madison Gardner and Antonio Guevara stood campaigning on opposite sides of the Student Government elections. Gardner wore blue and white to support presidential candidates Natalie Butler and Ashley Baker, while Guevara wore red and black to support Abel Mulugheta and Sameer Desai.

 The Student Government president expects to start appointing representatives this week to fill four available graduate student seats in an organization lacking in graduate student members.

The student presidents of SG, Senate and the Graduate Student Assembly said they must work together to best confront graduate student concerns. As GSA’s influence grows, SG and Senate leaders look to improve representation for graduate students.

With each nimble stroke, strum and pluck, the strings buzzed, sounding an ethereal melody into the small living room. Leaned against the shoulders of their players, music junior Meredith McCay and nursing junior Molly Cook used their grandiose, six-foot harps to produce a magical, idyllic sound. Between the mysticism of the harps and the passion and talent of the two close friends, the excitement surrounding the harp duo, Seven Pedals, is palpable.

Students have voiced concerns about possible tuition increases which are intended to improve four-year graduation rates and worry that those goals favor timely graduation rates over quality education.

About 50 people attended a Tuition Policy Advisory Committee forum about tuition recommendations for 2012-2014 on Wednesday. TPAC is considering recommending the largest tuition increases that the UT System will allow in order to cover budget shortfalls.

After a hearing and deliberation over discrepancy of official and unofficial appointments by the judicial branch of Student Government, a verdict has been reached.

SG School of Law representative Austin Carlson petitioned against several unofficial positions made by SG President Natalie Butler, who defended her actions by stating that expediency sometimes calls for sudden appointments.

Butler also said she should have the right to send someone to meetings in her place.

The Butler School of Music is attempting to refresh classical music by creating new pieces instead of replaying centuries old works, said Zack Stanton, assistant director of New Music Ensemble.

The New Music Ensemble combined music, vocals, poetry and artwork Wednesday in a performance that included works by UT students and alumni and was directed by professor Dan Welcher.
