Winston Churchill said that “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” A university that contributes so much to the local and global cultural dialogue should not ignore the reciprocal relationship between culture and architecture. Buildings and landscape are not merely passive spaces in which to perform activities. The way a building or outdoor area is designed influences the attitudes of the people who inhabit it.

Parking and Transportation Services hosted a town hall this morning to discuss the dismount zone around the Blanton Museum.

Under current restrictions, a dismount zone on Blanton Museum grounds does not allow for riders to ride their bikes near the vicinity. Biking on sidewalks is technically illegal on campus, and the space between the Blanton’s buildings is considered sidewalk.

Thirty-three museums and community organizations in Austin offered free entrance and activities Sunday as part of the 14th annual Austin Museum Day. The Austin Museum Partnership started Museum Day to showcase the city’s cultural offerings, said co-chair Stephanie Jarvis.

Opening Sunday, the Blanton Museum of Art’s latest exhibition “When I Last Wrote to You about Africa” will showcase a major retrospective of internationally renowned contemporary artist, El Anatsui. The traveling exhibition, organized by the Museum for African Art in New York City, spans four decades of the artist’s works drawn from public and private collections worldwide.

They discussed their views on slackers at a program presented Tuesday by the Blanton Museum of Art and the UT Visual Arts Center.

The UT Visual Arts Center announced Monday that New York artist Mika Tajima will spend three weeks on campus in the Artist-in-Residence program this semester.

Tajima, who currently lives in New York, manipulates multiple media in her modernist work. Tajima’s sculptures, paintings and other visual creations have been displayed in museums across the U.S., as well as the South London Gallery. Her work with each media is combined to create art installations that surround viewers as they walk through the display.

The Blanton Museum of Art acquired 12 new works of contemporary art for their permanent collection through a lottery organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and on behalf of art collectors Nona and Richard Barrett.
The paintings, sculptures and works on paper, all by Texas artists, is an expansion to the museum’s collection of regional art.

Bright green eyes and pouty red lips grace actress Farrah Fawcett’s face in Andy Warhol’s portrait of the movie maiden. One of two original silkscreen and paint portraits hangs in the Blanton Museum after Fawcett willed her artwork to the University, her alma mater.

The other original Warhol silkscreen remains missing, but it may have been found this week.

“Line”, the new exhibit at the Blanton Museum of Art, explores the ability to express ideas in an abstract fashion while only using one of the simplest artistic elements: the line.

The exhibit as a whole displays the translation of various themes through one limited element. The mediums ranged from a copper wire tangled into a ball, entitled “Autumn Cumulus” by Alan Saret, to Disney coloring-book pages used in “Night Before Last” by Arturo Herrera. The coloring-book pages analyzed the relationship between efficiency and expressiveness.

UT Bureau of Economic Geology director Scott Tinker drew nearly 300 people to a lecture on global energy consumption and usage.

Tinker’s lecture at the Blanton Museum of Art on Wednesday could appear on film as part of a documentary on the present and future state of energy consumption. The Arco Films production team has been working with Tinker on the 90-minute film since early 2009.

The trees outside the Blanton Museum of Art got yarn bombed during the weekend.
Local knitter Magda Sayeg teamed up with the Knotty Knitters club and other Austin knitters to transform the courtyard into an explosion of wool and color.
Yarn bombing, also known as knitter bombing and yarn graffiti, describes the tagging of yarn art in public spaces. Started a few years ago as an underground movement in the U.S., knitting graffiti has made its way to other parts of the world.

Kindergarten students might be more concerned with finger painting than with paintings from the Italian Renaissance, but this year they will have more opportunities to explore the works at the Blanton Museum of Art.

The Burdine Johnson Foundation awarded a $150,000 grant to the Blanton Museum of Art to support the museum’s initiatives to expand its K-12 programs.

Look at a map of the UT campus and the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium dwarfs the other buildings. One only needs to witness the 100,000 fans in the crowd walking to a home game to gauge the importance of the stadium on the 40 Acres.

Given the national attention paid to UT sports programs, we often overlook the strengths of our university’s cultural and scholarly contributions. UT students stand to enjoy a combination of both field goals and featured art exhibits.

After Aida Prazak attended Slow Art Day at the Blanton Museum of Art on Saturday, she was inspired to go home and create some artwork of her own.
“I collect vintage books at home, and I just wanted to go home and rip up my books,” said Prazak, a sociology senior.
