UT officials said the current economic woes are not stifling job opportunities for recent graduates, but their chosen career paths may be changing.
The College of Liberal Arts has not seen a large shift in job placement trends in terms of numbers of graduates gaining employment. With many former Longhorns seeking jobs in Austin, the local economy is having more of an effect than the national one, said Neil Johnson, a liberal arts student development specialist, also known as a career coach.
“I think Austin has been pretty insulated from other parts of the country,” he said. “We have a real diversity of industry and a lot of growth in this city.”
Johnson said there has been increased interest in education and non-profit fields. The number of liberal arts students applying for Teach for America and the Peace Corps has gone up in the last year.
Career coaches emphasize the importance of transferable skills and targeted resumes when talking to job-hunting students. They also encourage students to be proactive and submit resumes to a variety of companies.
