Colt McCoy ran and passed No. 3 Texas past Texas A&M Thursday night in a 49-39 shootout at Kyle Field. McCoy had a career high 175 rushing yards and 304 passing, scoring five combined touchdowns.
The Aggies rallied behind quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who ran for 97 yards and threw for 342, with four touchdowns.
After falling behind 7-0 after a 70-yard touchdown throw on the first possession, Texas built a 28-21 lead at the half, scoring to take the lead with five seconds left on the clock.
But after adding to their lead in the third, Texas couldn’t pull away from A&M, needing a kickoff return for a touchdown by freshman Marquise Goodwin and a defensive stop inside the 20 to hold on in the highest-scoring game in the history of the rivalry.
Texas racked up 597 yards of total offense, needing each one to hold off Johnson and the Aggies, who gained 532 of their own.
Twice, the Aggies pulled to within three, but the Longhorns responded both times with a 47-yard touchdown catch by James Kirkendoll, his second of the day, on third-and-long. After Johnson led another touchdown drive, Goodwin went 95 yards right up the middle on the ensuing kick return.
After A&M missed a short field goal with two minutes left, Texas was able to run out the clock, surviving with their national title hopes still intact.
