Hundreds of people braved the scorching summer heat at the Texas Capitol Saturday to protest the federal stimulus bill, taxes, President Obama’s proposed health care program and illegal immigration. Others protested the speakers, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

Many in the crowd carried anti-Obama signs with words such as “Stop the Obama Coup,” “Obama Marxist Traitor,” and “Washington, You Have Run Out of Money.”

The “tea party,” held outside the Capitol, was one of 40 scheduled across Texas during the Fourth of July weekend. The rally was organized by the Texas office of Americans for Prosperity, a nonpartisan group that advocates economic freedom.

Wayne Allyn Root, the 2008 Libertarian vice presidential nominee, who spoke at the event, said the media calls him the “anti-Obama.”

“My friends call me ‘war’, and that’s a good thing right now, because we have a war with people who want to raise your taxes to socialist levels,” Root said, setting off an uproar of applause.

Root also told the crowd that he has four words for politicians who voted for the Trouble Assets Relief Program: “Throw the bums out!”

Cornyn was greeted by a mixture of boos and applause. He recently came under fire from conservatives when he voted for the Troubled Assets Relief Program, which bailed out failing national banks last year.

The senator was drowned out by boos as he thanked Americans for organizing the Tea Party and praised the Founding

Fathers for their patriotism.

“I realize not everybody wants to listen, but maybe some people do,” he said. “If you’ll let them listen.”

One audience member who said she wanted to listen, Austin resident Wendy Burchick, sat in the shade of a low hanging sycamore in a folding chair with two American flags sticking out of the cup holders, wearing a red, white and blue shirt covered with stars and stripes.

“I’m sick and tired of being taxed to death,” she said. “Enough is enough. We are headed towards a Marxist socialist society.”

Almost yelling into the microphone, Perry criticized the federal government to the screaming crowd.

“It’s nice to see a bunch of people who understand that the shenanigans that are going on in Washington D.C. are not just some misguided attempts at social engineering, but they are legitimate threats to our freedom, our finances and our future,” Perry said.

Perry’s public stance on the federal stimulus bill has made him popular among those who oppose big government, but some crowd members booed him, while a few scattered chants of “traitor” reverberated through the crowd as he spoke. The governor rejected $550 million in federal economic stimulus money slated to help Texas’ unemployment trust fund this year.

Kevin Smith, a cattle rancher in the Austin area, said the governor’s rhetoric may sound good, but he hasn’t followed through on any of it.

“Everything out of his mouth is crap,” he said. “He’s trying to make all roads toll roads. He’s selling all of our assets to foreign companies and foreign governments.”

For some at the rally, political party affiliations and politicians were not the main concern.

Paul Smith, Gulf War veteran and speaker at the tea party, emphasized the importance of law enforcement and the military.

“I’m going to speak to the law enforcement and military today because they are so important,” Smith said, before addressing the hundreds of people gathered at the capitol. “They are the arm of this new world order. If they wake up to what’s going on, then the government has lost their fire power in a big sense.”

Smith said that he can’t really be defined by any political affiliation.

“I think that’s a big part of the problem is that people get caught up in all these labels and titles — Republican and Democrat,” he said. “I don’t like to call myself anything. It really comes down to the constitution. I think that’s what brings us all together and allows us to focus on what’s important.”

Sal says Ron Paul is not lving in "reality". RON PAUL IS NOT LVING IN "REALITY". With all of the crap that is going on, with Wall Street crminals being bailed out by American taxpayers, as well as banks, and every single economic policy the Obama Administration is carrying out is wrong, RON PAUL ISN'T LIVING IN REALITY. that;s a good one.

Ron Paul is not living in reality where we need public education, laws and law enforcement to run an orderly society. The key to making government run smoother isn't electing people that like things as they are and will keep them as they are like John Cornyn. The key isn't electing people that see things could run smoother but are too lazy to do anything about it like Ron Paul. If you want to change government, elect people that change government.

A big government proposes a 1,000+ page bill, introduces it during the middle of the night, and lawmakers push it through the next day. How many bills do we have on the books like this? And this is not a "big" government? And, yes, multinational corporate behemoths should be reigned in and the functions of government simplified and made transparent so that ordinary Americans can tell what is going on. Ron Paul's ideas are our only hope, campaignforliberty.com.

Too bad we can't save Americans from the right wing lunatics who for some cuckoo reason value corporate profits over the well being of the average American family. They'll let WalMart rake in money, Exxon suck up money and Haliburton break international laws to make more money but will fight tooth and nail to keep minimum wage under $7.00 an hour.

How else can you explain that choice other than the people that would keep the system going like that are either a.) psychotic and should be receiving mental health treatment or b.) agents of Satan?

Either I missed the boat or something. We are not in Iraq due to El Quida, WMD's or terroist, (NONE OF THESE THINGS WERE THERE JUST OIL AND LAST WEEK THE 4 OR 5 BIG OIL COMPANIES PROVED THE POINT AS THEY BID ON THE OIL PRODUCTION OF IRAQ, JUST WHAT CHENEY AND BUSH WANTED) WE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, we were there for the money the big multinational corporate behemoths (OIL COMPANIES NOTHING MORE) WHO had paid to get bush/cheney elected who has destroyed our constitution, the GC, and POW's status all for the oil companies who now have their headquarters in foreign none taxing countries, thanks to gw and cheney.
We, in America, need to stop the anchor baby rules. We are the only country in the world that will allow one to steal into the country to have a child and it become a citizen. I really do not believe that is what our founding fathers had in mind. Mexico and those south of us steal in during the dark of the night and rob millions if not billions from our social services and some seem to think that is okay, until they get their tax bill and they then complain about high tax. Should we rid our nation of all criminal illegal aliens and their anchor kids we could/would not need to increase our tax, THINK AMERICA WE COULD REDUCE OUR TAX IF WE WOULD COULD QUIT SUPPORTING THE CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS AND THEIR KIDS. Just think of the groceries, they would go down in cost, the price of gas would fall as it would not be needed if the illegal were not here.
Our schools could cut the cost of so much of the activity that is not needed if we have no criminal illegal aliens in this country. AMERICA WAKE UP STOP THE ALEINS AT THE BORDER DO NOT LET THEM IN AND WE CAN SAVE AMERICA.

It sickens me that these traitors consider themselves Patriots when they want to stop all support to the military and weaken our national defense. If they stop all military funding, who is going to stay up at nights listening for and decoding encrypted messages from the terrorists who mean us harm? How are they going to prepare to defend this beautiful nation from attacks by North Korea or China? They just want to leave us wide open, as if they themselves could defend our nation from an outside attack. They're traitors and they should be punished as such.

If you don't like taxes and you don't like America, move to China or Cuba, fruitcakes.

Maybe you big bunch of crybabies would be happier in Iraq where our brave soldiers are fighting for the very freedom that allows you to complain about taxes. Freedom ain't free! Pay your way and shut up or get out!

If there's one thing that ideologically and morally bankrupt politicians like Perry can do, it's whip a crowd into a fervor by getting them to believe people are trying to take their "freedom" and "money" and "religion" away from them. I'd wager that most of these people yelling about Marxism and socialism haven't read beyond the first couple of sentences of a wikipedia article about these subjects. And where to begin about the sign saying "stop the Obama coup". I thought he was democratically elected in a landslide by the people of the US. When was the coup, exactly?

Just for the record, name a couple of these "multinational corporate behemoths" and give examples of how they "run our government." Thanks.

One statement is completely on point: we get caught up in labels and titles, not in substance.

What amazes me is that so many passionate folks look upon "big" government as the problem, when in fact the problem is multinational corporate behemoths that run our government--not "we the people." By further diminishing the influence of the public interest and welfare through the condemnation of "big" government, we wind up with less regulation and even greater subservience to global monopolies and oligopolies.
