Roaring applause echoed through the Texas Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel as Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama spoke before an eager group of Texas Democrats. The group waited in anticipation for their rock star-like presidential hopefuls. Most party-goers stood throughout the entire debate but said a chair would have made the event more enjoyable. Nearly 2,000 people attended the Texas Democratic Party watching party, most paying $50 for a ticket to the event. Members of the crowd shared an admiration for the two Democrats, but many had other reasons for making their donation to the Texas Democratic Party. "I figured it was going to a good cause," said Angelina Callis, business marketing junior at St. Edward's University. "To me, it's money well spent." Others came to the fundraiser to show their support for plans dealing with the issues important to them. "I think the most important issue for me is health care for everyone," said Carol Brewer, who expressed concern for her daughter-in-law who has had difficulty getting health care. Kelly Tankersley, president of Biocorp Inc., brought her daughter, Bryana, to the event in hopes that it would be inspiring for the 8-year-old. "I'm trying to get her involved in her future," she said. Katherine Frolow, recruiting associate at the Gerson Lehrman Group, said that her involvement in politics since graduating from UT brought her to the fundraiser. "I thought I'd come out and support the party and be part of something so historic," she said. Whatever their reasons for attending the event, the Democrats were in agreement of the importance of the state's prominence in the primary and the ultimate goal following the debate. Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie addressed the crowd with a hopeful projection for the future of the candidates. "I'm confident that one of them is going to be the next president of the United States," he said. "Onward to victory."
