The UT student organization Feel Good aims to end world hunger through the sale of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. Their motto is "ending world hunger one grilled cheese at a time," and they mean business.

Donate that spare pocket change, and in return, make a choice from a selection of up to 16 different kinds of bread from Central Market, three kinds of cheeses and a wide variety of toppings, including tomatoes, sprouts, cucumbers and onions. All proceeds go to The Hunger Project - an international organization with the same goals - and toward buying more sandwich supplies.

All sandwiches are grilled on a George Foreman Grill and can be ready and wrapped up in foil in three minutes if time is an issue.

Kristin Walter, former UT student and co-founder of Feel Good, said they made $10,000 in six months by accepting donations from students last year.

Her goal is to have a Feel Good on every college campus across the nation. In Vermont, Feel Good members are working on building a permanent grilled cheese kiosk so they can sell grilled cheese every day. Austin's own Feel Good hopes to begin construction on their own kiosk. Currently they sell sandwiches three times a week on the West Mall.

For customers allergic to cheese or who simply don't like it, Feel Good is in the process of making shirts, water bottles and stickers you can buy instead of a sandwich.

"What we try to spread to other students is, it's our generation's responsibility to end hunger," said Walter. "We believe hunger can be ended in our lifetime."

Alissa Beckner, a biology sophomore and president of Feel Good, said the response from students has been positive. "They love it. They're like, 'Oh my gosh,' because grilled cheese is what their moms use to make them when they were kids," Beckner said.

Beckner describes Feel Good as laid back, with very few time commitments. They have meetings on Wednesdays, but she said mostly they watch "American Idol" or "The Simple Life." Members also organized a Grilled Cheese Festival in fall 2004 at which bands played. Beckner said they hope to do it again this semester.

Why the name Feel Good? "Because we like to make people feel good. Grilled cheese makes people feel good," Walter said.
