Running back and kick returner Selvin Young receives a ball during Monday´s practise. Young will start behind Cedric Benson at tailback.

For Texas football players, Sunday's off-day provided their first chance to relax and regroup after practicing non-stop for two weeks.

For the coaches, it was another chance to see what they have.

"We are not exactly where we need to be, but we are further along than we have been in some years, because we pushed this team harder in a lot of ways," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "[Monday] morning was tough, and they responded well. It's hot, and it's the 16th practice, but they fought through it."

The coaching staff took Sunday to review the tape of Saturday's scrimmage and evaluate the progress of the team. Brown said they would examine the hustle and work ethic of each player closely - hoping to see a team that was motivated and anxious for the start of the season.

But Brown also echoed the sentiments of many who watched the scrimmage by giving praise to his quarterback, Vince Young. Young continued to impress during Monday's practice, where the Longhorns worked extensively on the two-minute no-huddle offense. Young and his receivers made it look easy against the defensive backs throughout the drills, giving hope to the coaches that the passing game will be potent enough to take pressure off the running game.

The other Young

Among the players who stood out the most was running back/kick returner Selvin Young. Although Young has proven his ball-carrying ability continually through his first two seasons, With Heisman candidate Cedric Benson looked into the starting job in front of him, Young's carries will likely be limited. But as fans at Saturday's scrimmage witnessed when he took a punt 73 yards to the house, Young will still have plenty of chances to shine.

"Everybody is a role player on this team, and I feel like my role is to make something happen in the return game," Young said. "I have big shoes to fill with Nathan Vasher gone, but I think that I can do it."

Update

Backup quarterback Chance Mock dressed in full pads again but did not run or throw the ball.
