Snapping a nine-year losing streak of regular season matches in Waco, No. 7 Texas defeated No. 13 Baylor Wednesday, by a close 4-3 count at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco.
The win keeps Texas in the hunt for the Big 12 regular season title and handed Baylor its first conference loss of the season, advancing the Horns to a 4-1 Big 12 record and 18-4 record overall.
The Bears gave Texas a tough time from the beginning of Wednesday's match, which was originally intended to be played on April 9 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
Sophomores Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala drew first blood at third doubles, defeating Dominik Mueller and Jordan Rux by a hard fought 8-6 count. Kellen Damico and Ed Corrie secured the doubles point for the Longhorns at the first position in an 8-5 nail-bitter against David Galic and Denes Kukacs. Texas senior Luis Diaz Barriga and junior Miguel Reyes Varela faltered at second doubles, failing to deliver the finishing blow to Lars Poerschke and Attila Bucko in a 9-8 loss.
Moving into singles play, Baylor struck back quickly as Lukacs defeated Texas' Damico by a 6-3, 6-2 count at second singles. At third singles, Corrie handed Baylor's Galic an easy 6-1, 6-4 defeat. Kutrovsky put the Longhorns up by 3-1 in his 6-4, 7-6 win over Baylor's eighth-ranked Poerschke.
The Longhorns clinched the match with Diaz Barriga's extended 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Mueller, yet Baylor continued to play, stealing the last two matches at fifth and sixth singles from the Longhorns as Baylor's Rux defeated Reyes Varela 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 and Bucko defeated Texas' Milan Mihailovic 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
