D.J. Augustin's ability on the basketball court has received plenty of attention. Now, his academic acumen is drawing accolades.
ESPN the Magazine named Augustin to its Academic All-District 6 first team this week. With the honor comes automatic inclusion on the Academic All-American ballot.
This weekend, the sophomore will have to do his homework on the road.
The Longhorns (18-4, 5-2 Big 12) visit Ames, Iowa, to play Iowa State (13-10. 3-5) on Saturday.
Their meeting will be a very pink affair. The game is a part of "Think Pink" weekend, and coaches from both teams will be wearing the roseate hue to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The issue strikes close to home for the Cyclones and their head coach Greg McDermott.
Two years ago, while McDermott was leading Northern Iowa into the NCAA Tournament, his wife was battling the deadly disease. This year she counts herself a survivor.
While the weekend serves as a reminder that basketball is just a game, the result matters just as much as ever.
Coming off consecutive wins, the Longhorns look to maintain their momentum. No. 4 Kansas is just around the corner, and No. 12 Texas needs all the help it can get, tangible or not.
If the Cyclones want to upset Texas, they'll have to either score more than they have been lately or hold the Longhorns to less than 60 points. In Iowa State's last five games, the Cyclones haven't managed to reach the 60-point mark.
Texas has been trying to figure out the right combination of starters over the last few games, with three different lineups taking the court for opening tip-off.
Dexter Pittman got his first start against Baylor. Against Oklahoma, Clint Chapman made his first career start. Damion James came on in relief for both of them, but he had a poor game, going 1-for-6 shooting during Wednesday's win.
It seems likely that Gary Johnson or another bench player could get a chance to make a start against the Cyclones.
Whichever five Longhorns start against Iowa State, Augustin, Texas' Academic All-District first-teamer, will be among them.
