With a win over Texas Tech Sunday, Texas secured a No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. The No. 21 Longhorns finished the 2008 season 15-5, with a 10-1 conference record.
Texas topped the Red Raiders 6-1 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns dropped the doubles point but captured all of the singles.
At No. 1 doubles, junior Marija Milic and Vanja Corovic were defeated by Janet Durham and Samantha Van der Drift 6-8. Milic and Corovic, ranked No. 20 in the ITA, have lost two consecutive doubles matches and will probably drop in the rankings when the next updates are posted.
Texas also lost the doubles match at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Stephanie Davison and freshman Caroline Larsson couldn't get comfortable and lost 3-8 to Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter.
Senior Courtney Zauft and freshman Abby Liu won at No. 3 doubles, posting an 8-4 victory over Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton. For Zauft, the performance was quite uplifting since this last home match was Senior Day.
In singles, the first match was won at the No. 6 position by freshman Maggie Mello, as she coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Leah Roberts.
At the No. 3 position, Davison dominated Garland, winning 6-1, 6-2. Zauft was next to win, as she defeated Durham at the No. 2 slot, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Sarah Lancaster won the clinching point for Texas, setting the match score at 4-1, with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Potgieter at No. 5. Larsson won at No. 4, beating Templeton 6-3, 6-2.
Corovic, who is ranked No. 61 in ITA singles and has won nine of her last 10 singles matches, battled to win against Van der Drift. Corovic lost the first set 6-7 (1) but won the second set 6-2, and tiebreak 10-4.
Texas's lone conference loss came from the match against Baylor on Saturday. No. 3 Baylor (25-2, 11-0) bested the Longhorns 7-0 in route to capturing the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Conference.
At No. 1 doubles, Milic and Corovic lost to the No. 7 doubles pair in the nation, Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova, 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Davison and Larsson won 8-5 over No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk. Zauft and Liu suffered an 8-5 defeat to Jana Bielikova and Zuzana Chmelarova at No. 3.
Baylor swept the singles, with three players winning after coming back from a set down.
In No. 1, Corovic was crushed 2-6, 1-6 by No. 25 Zemenova. At No. 2, Zauft was beaten by Broosova 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).
At the No. 3 position, Davison played No. 36 Ormond, and after winning the first set 6-1, lost the next two sets 6-0, 6-4.
At No. 4, Larsson couldn't keep pace with Bielikova, falling 2-6, 2-6. Lancaster was finished off quickly by Stanivuk, barely winning two games, in a 1-6, 1-6 loss.
At No. 6, Mello lost 7-6 (3), 4-6, 0-1 (10-8) to Baylor freshman Karolina Filipiak.
