Man charged with assault for tossing phone at Everett

A 24-year-old man accused of throwing a cell phone that hit Texas right fielder Carl Everett in the back of the head during a game faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Juan-Carlos Covarrubias-Serrano, of Palo Alto, Calif., was arrested during the Rangers' 12-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday after fans pointed him out to authorities, and after Everett alerted stadium security.

The phone was thrown from the second deck of the Coliseum, said David Rinetti, the A's vice president of stadium operations. Covarrubias-Serrano was intoxicated, Rinetti said, and will be arraigned on Tuesday.

He was being held on $15,000 bail.

"I don't think this guy wanted to wake up on Easter morning in prison," Rinetti said. "Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson."

Security was heightened for Sunday's game. Rinetti said staffing was increased and a uniformed police officer was stationed at the visitor's bullpen. In addition, an in-house video monitoring system was being used to monitor the right-field area.

Everett was hit four days after umpire Laz Diaz was attacked by a fan at U.S. Cellular field in Chicago during a White Sox-Royals game.

Round Rock Express fall 6-4 at El Paso Diablos

An early season slump continued for the Round Rock Express Sunday, as the El Paso Diablos came from behind with a four-run eighth inning to win 6-4.

With the Express leading 4-2 entering the eighth, Craig Ansman erased the lead with a two run double off Jory Coughenour (1-2), the eventual losing pitcher. Two hitters later, Corey Myers doubled Ansman home to complete to comeback.

Round Rock (4-13) was looking to break out of their slump when the Express tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning on a Mike Rosamond two-run double. Chris Burke and Dax Norris would drive in runs in the seventh and eighth innings before the Diablos (11-7) took the game over.

Burke and Rosamond were the leading batters for the Express, as Burke hit 3-5, and Rosamond 3-4. Both had a double each for the game.

Round Rock won one of four games at El Paso, and has Monday off before returning home Tuesday to Dell Diamond to face Tulsa at 7:05 p.m.
