Women finish as runners up in Big 12 tournament play

Texas lost to Baylor in the Big 12 Championship finals on Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. Texas was held to only one point, losing 4-1 in singles.

The first Longhorn to fall in this quick match, which barely lasted two hours, was sophomore Stephanie Davison. Davison lost to No. 17 Lenka Broosova in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.

At No. 1 singles, No. 59 sophomore Vanja Corovic was defeated by Bears senior No. 4 Zuzana Zemenova 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Maggie Mello played in the No. 5 slot and was beaten by Jelena Stanivuk, 7-5, 6-1.

Texas's only point in the match came from sophomore Sarah Lancaster at No. 6 singles. Lancaster won 6-2, 6-3 over Zuzana Chmelarova.

Baylor's fourth and final point came from freshman Caroline Larsson's 6-2, 7-5 loss to No. 100 Jana Bielikova at the No. 4 slot.

Texas got to the final match after beating Texas A&M on their home courts in a 4-3 grudge match. Texas lost the doubles point, despite a stellar performance by Corovic and Milic at No. 1. Corovic and Milic defeated seniors Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford 8-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Davison and Larsson suffered a loss to Christi Liles and Elzé Potgieter 8-6, and Mello and Zauft fell to Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank 9-8 (3).

In singles, Zauft put Texas on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Liles at the No. 2 position. Corovic followed, with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 103 Potgieter at No. 1 singles. At No. 4, Larsson lost to Frank 4-6, 3-6, while Mello won 6-4, 7-5 over Clifford at No. 5.

Lancaster was topped by Davidson at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. The match was decided by the crucial match won by Davison. Davison defeated Blagodarova in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

After a first-round bye in the Big 12 Championship tournament, second-seeded Texas defeated 10th-seeded Kansas State 4-0 on Friday. KSU got the chance to play the Longhorns because it defeated seventh-seeded Nebraska in the first round.

At doubles, Corovic and Milic coasted by Olga Klimova and Katka Kudlackova, winning 8-2. At. No. 2 doubles, Davison and Larsson deafeatd Vanessa Cottin and Antea Huljev 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for Texas.

In singles, Lancaster was the first Longhorn to put a point on the board, beating Pauline Guemas 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot.

Davison crushed Kudlackova 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Corovic clinched the victory, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Viviana Yrureta at No. 1 singles.
