After the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage on June 26, 2015, people celebrated all over Austin, including the Central Prespyterian Church, the Metropolitan Community Church, 4th Street bars, nightclubs and 4th Street itself.
Early Friday morning, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage is a right upheld by the Constitution in a 5–4 decision. The Supreme Court ruling dismantled the prohibitions of same-sex marriage in 13 states, including Texas. Accordingly, many couples rushed to the Travis County Clerk's Office Friday morning to get their marriage licenses.
Since last Thursday, members of Planned Parenthood have been and plan to continue protesting outside the Governor's Mansion against a bill that, they claim, hurts women’s preventive cancer screenings — particularly for low-income women and women of color.
