Over drinking, drugs and an increase of criminal activity downtown at popular nightlife destinations, such as Sixth Street, has caused police patrolling those areas to use more force, according to a detective with the Austin Police Department.
After the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage on June 26, 2015, people celebrated all over Austin, including the Central Prespyterian Church, the Metropolitan Community Church, 4th Street bars, nightclubs and 4th Street itself.
Early Friday morning, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage is a right upheld by the Constitution in a 5–4 decision. The Supreme Court ruling dismantled the prohibitions of same-sex marriage in 13 states, including Texas. Accordingly, many couples rushed to the Travis County Clerk's Office Friday morning to get their marriage licenses.
