A lesson in strict construction

In response to Chris Jones' Feb. 18 column, "Conservative ideas, no dogma please:" The only mental deficiency I read is this column. You have ignored the facts and oversimplified the positions and issues. I can have respect for liberal ideas when they are actual ideas. How do you propose we fix Social Security and save all of those "hard luck cases?" You are forcing us to make the argument, yet you don't have one ready for us. Plus, do I really think you want to rely on Social Security someday? What about the idea of teaching people how to make better investment decisions, or would that ultimately put too much faith in people? Should we put more faith in the government instead? As for Constitutional interpretation, I can understand where you are coming from, but there is a difference between strict construction and sensible strict construction. Being a strict constructionist doesn't mean we view the world as a gentleman farmer might, because as far as I know, the 3/5 rule was changed. A sensible strict constructionist would know about the Reconstruction amendments.

Sure there are nuts in my party, as there are nuts in every party. The only way to get rid of them is to ignore them and have faith in the people and the voters to make the right decision. Or can we really trust the people? Do you?

Facts before attacks As I was riding one of the UT shuttles home, I was horrified to see a rider get on the bus wearing a shirt with a picture of both Democratic presidential candidates with a caption proclaiming "Bros before hoes." The caption clearly implied that Hillary Clinton is a whore. With Obama constantly acting self-righteous at the so-called "negative attacks" of Hillary Clinton, I find this display to be particularly hypocritical. And while some will say that Obama would never endorse such a shirt, it makes me question whether or not his supporters actually believe the ideas of change that he so frequently espouses. It seems that there has indeed been no change, and that Obama is just another candidate with empty words and mindless followers. Bradley Barmer History freshman
