Calling for a call-box follow-up
I would like to thank The Daily Texan for publishing the fine investigative reporting of Ben Lankford ("Fence blocks police call box," Aug. 3). I can breathe easier knowing there are journalists like Mr. Lankford in the world covering stories that are difficult and controversial but relevant to the community. While I admire the depth of the article, I feel that the readership would have welcomed a lengthier expose of the call-box controversy that has embroiled city, university and private entities alike. A follow-up article exploring the theme of "who would be at fault if a crime occurred near the box while it is inaccessible" would be well received by the university community. I believe that I will not be the only reader eagerly awaiting another story about the West Campus call-box controversy. In the meantime, I continue to admire The Daily Texan's ongoing commitment to giving front-page priority to only the most timely and relevant news.

The misdirection of McElroy
I'm surprised not to have seen any news coverage in the Texan about Rick Perry's recent appointment of Don McElroy as head of the Texas State Board of Education. McElroy is a young-Earth creationist with anti-evolution essays on his personal Web site. Further, he is a proponent of the theory that abstinence is the only sexual education our public school students should receive.
Forgetting for a moment that this makes us look like damned fools to the rest of the world, if left to make the decisions about how our students are taught, the only university they will be qualified to get into is the unaccredited Bob Jones University.
I hope the Texan will have headlines about his attempts to pervert science education in Texas in the upcoming months.
