History, not segregation

To The Daily Texan Viewpoint staff: What the hell (or heck) were you thinking when you described the campus statues of deceased confederates as "dead white men"? Also, I don't think anyone who visits UT will get from the statues that the 40 Acres is "some Confederate war college." I'm not one to stand for political correctness, but I seriously doubt you would ever describe some prominent deceased black American as a "dead black man."

Instead of making snide remarks like those in Wednesday's Viewpoint, why not substantiate and justify your contention that the Confederate statues are a "legacy of racial prejudice"?

Most Texans, past and present, see such statues as a tribute to Texas history and not as an endorsement of the segregation policies of a half-century ago.

Frist's misdiagnosis

In Wednesday's Nation Briefs, I found the results of Terri Schiavo's autopsy to be a bit ironic. The tests showed that she was not only irreversibly brain damaged but blind as well.

This goes to show that Republican "Doctor" of the Senate Bill Frist should have refrained from his expert diagnosis from the Senate floor where he questioned her vegetative state status by saying, "I question it based on a review of the video footage which I spent an hour or so looking at last night in my office. She certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli."

So if Frist can make the blind see, maybe he can try to raise the dead as well, bringing Terri back to life just in time for the next election.

They should use the garages

A possible solution for the 5:30 p.m. workers and the tickets they have received would be the purchase of a garage parking pass. I am not referring to the $100 parking pass but the night garage parking permit. It costs less than $50 - still less than the cost of two or three tickets. The permit holder is allowed to park after 5 p.m. The permit lasts for the entire semester which is less than a dollar a day. This allows the workers 30 minutes to get to their respected work-site.

Did this "problem" deserve front page news? It seems as if the Texan was "reaching" a little bit. Let's be proactive instead of complaining about parking! It is a problem for everyone, not just workers.
