News Briefly: Cigarette found to be cause of fire in North Campus

A fire that displaced dozens of students from a North Campus condominium complex over spring break was caused by a forgotten cigarette, a spokeswoman for the Austin Fire Department said Thursday.

AFD spokeswoman Michelle DeCrane said the Friday-night fire destroyed or damaged seven apartments in the 33-unit building at 3111 Tom Green St. and left a section of the building structurally unstable.

Student Emergency Services is working with at least six students who lost their homes or property in the fire and asked any students from the complex who need assistance to call (512) 471-5017.
