Mayoral candidate Brewster McCracken is expected to concede this afternoon after results from Saturday's municipal election showed his opponent Lee Leffingwell in the lead with about a 20-point margin.

McCracken will speak at a joint press conference with Leffingwell where he is scheduled to declare his intention to concede. The conference will take place at city hall at 4p.m.

A runoff election between the two council members was expected as neither one of them received enough votes to reach a majority.

McCracken would have entered the runoff election with roughly half the amount of votes than Leffingwell. Leffingwell led with 47.24 percent of voters while McCracken received 26.8 percent.

In a release to his supporters, McCracken explained his reasoning for leaving the race.

"I believe my campaign could have made a runoff election a robust competition, but I have concluded that going forward would not be in the best interests of Austin," McCracken said in his release.
