It cannot be denied that eating out at restaurants is a social thing. When large groups of people get together, they will probably want to eat things. Eating is the new socializing.

Unfortunately, making a habit of regular restaurant dining is expensive. If you eat out three times per week, you’re probably unknowingly spending upwards of $2,000 per year at subpar casual chains. With the economy plummeting and West Campus apartment rent rising by the second, things seem pretty bleak on the dining front.

Enter FrugalFeaster.com, a new Web site on the radar with the mantra that “if you have the right information, dining out doesn’t have to be expensive.” With the goal of finding the best dining deals among the scores of Austin restaurants, FrugalFeaster.com posts daily and weekly specials offered by some of Austin’s most popular restaurants. Free of charge and open to the public, this Web site is a great idea for anyone who wants to “go out and enjoy the great food in Austin without breaking the bank.”

Navigating the Web site is simple. The site lists categories for each restaurant, its price and the dates. Attached are links to driving directions and menus. For example, a current offering involves two-for-one burgers at Hut’s Hamburgers on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. A glance at the “Half Price Appetizers” category reveals Austin Java offering said discount after 5 pm.

Though the site doesn’t currently have hoards of listings, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt because it’s new. The concept is great, and I predict that Frugal Feaster has the ability to be a very practical tool.

With online food discounts, the only commitment required in getting a delicious meal in the luxury of a restaurant is a bit of time spent on the Internet — like you don’t do that already.
No longer do evenings do have to be plagued with dinners consisting of cold Ramen noodles and generic saltine crackers. By finding a delicious meal with a reasonable price tag, you can have your cake and eat it, too.
