July is National Hot Dog Month, honoring a classic snack that, for Americans, has become synonymous with baseball and summer. While there is still debate over who invented the hot dog or where exactly it originated, Americans have been enjoying hot dogs since as early as 1871, when the first Coney Island hot dog stand opened. Before the month is out, celebrate an American tradition and eat a hot dog from one of these establishments:

Dog Almighty

Short of grilling your own hot dog in the backyard, Dog Almighty is the best hot dog you can find in Austin. The winner of many hot-dog-related awards, Dog Almighty offers an all-beef frank with your choice of all the toppings under the sun. The franks are charbroiled, and the buns are toasted on a griddle, replicating the backyard cookout taste. Dog Almighty is unique in that it also provides a meat-free option for everything on its menu. Veggie dogs and award-winning meatless chili finally makes the world of hot dogs easily accessible to the vegetarian crowd.

Mighty Fine

There seems to be one idea behind Mighty Fine, and that's to make as much as they can on-site. While Mighty Fine specializes in hand-formed burgers and milk shakes, they also offer a one-of-a-kind chili dog. Mighty Fine's Chopped Chili Cheese Dog is made with homemade chili and custom-made franks by Taylor Meat Company of Taylor, Texas. For this chili dog, the frank is chopped up and mixed with the chili, making the chili dog easy to pick up and eat while providing an even mix of flavor and texture.

Alamo Drafthouse

Regardless of which one you go to, the Alamo Drafthouse offers some serious hot dog fare. Their Over The Top Dog is a traditional hot dog served with mustard, relish and ketchup on the side, while their Maximum Overdog is a monster chili cheese dog smothered in ribeye chili and grilled onions. Both franks themselves weigh in at a whopping quarter pound and are served in a toasted hoagie bun. Eating one of these will surely satisfy any hot dog cravings.
