PALATINE, ILL. - Science fiction writer Frederik Pohl works on his laptop at his Palatine, Ill. home July 22. During an interview with the Associated Press, Pohl discussed the book he co-wrote with longtime friend Arthur C. Clarke. "The Last Theorem," due in bookstores Aug. 5, represents a historic collaboration between two of the genre's most influential writers in the twilight of their careers. Clarke died in March at age 90; Pohl is 89. Clarke - best known for his 1968 work, "2001: A Space Odyssey" - originally intended "The Last Theorem" to be his final solo project, and began writing it in 2002. Poor health forced Clarke to search for a co-author.
