Saved by the Shirts

Dustin Diamond, better known as Screech from "Saved by the Bell," is selling shirts with his picture and the words "save my house" for charity, but not in the way you expect. After receiving a foreclosure order on his Port Washington, Wis., home, he decided to sell the shirts to get $250,000 and hopes to make enough money to pay off his debts.

Rather to leave CBS

Dan Rather, 74, will not be returning to "60 Minutes" next season, according to a CBS executive. After more than 40 years, Rather will be leaving CBS, as they try to bring in a new generation including Katie Couric, who will start in the fall as a correspondent, and Anderson Cooper, who will also contribute stories. Rather told the Inquirer that he wants to continue working. "The question is whether they have anything for me to do that I think is meaningful," Rather said.

Glam rocker loses abuse appeal

Gary Glitter, English rock-pop singer who rose to stardom in the early 1970s during the glam rock era, lost his appeal Thursday as the People's Supreme Court of Vietnam upheld the child molestation conviction and three-year prison sentence. He was found guilty on March 3 of committing obscene acts such as kissing, fondling and engaging in other physical acts with young girls at his villa in southern Vietnam. During the 1970s, Glitter had one of the longest chart runs of any solo singer, and his hit "Rock and Roll" is a favorite chant at sports events in the U.S.

Tom Cruise tops Forbes' Celebrity 100 Power List

Tom Cruise's romance with Katie Holmes, anti-postpartum depression comments about Brooke Shields and attack on Oprah's couch secured his position at No. 1 on Forbes' Celebrity 100 Power List. Every year Forbes releases a list of celebrities ranking them based on earnings and buzz. Cruise is the only celebrity to top the list twice, according to Forbes editor Lea Goldman. Cruise was No. 1 in 2001 as well. Oprah Winfrey, who topped the list last year, dropped to No. 3 this year.

President Bush passes law increasing fines for indecency

At a signing ceremony Thursday, President Bush passed a new law increasing the amount the Federal Communications Commission can fine broadcasters for indecency by tenfold. After two years of debate sparked by the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl, the law was passed allowing the FCC to fine up to $325,000 for raunchy talk or a racy show of skin. The definition of indecent material formulated by the FCC is any material which contains sexual or excretory material that does not rise to the level of obscenity.
