The DuPrees are not your typical family. Hailing from Tyler, Texas, the quintet (a composition of siblings Sherri, Chauntelle, Stacy, Weston and their cousin Garron DuPree) have headlined six tours and opened for Coldplay, Hot Hot Heat, Snow Patrol and Switchfoot. Oh yeah, and all but one are under the age of 25.
An eclectic mix of indie pop, harmonious folk and melancholic "fairy tales," Eisley's unique music has been described as "darkly whimsical," "unpredictable" and "brilliant." Over the next two months, the band is embarking on a whirlwind U.S. tour to promote their sophomore album, Combinations. Stacy DuPree chatted with The Daily Texan this week to discuss life on the road, Combinations and why she can't get enough of Harry Potter.
Daily Texan: First of all, how does it feel to be back on the road? You've got an impressive tour lined up.
Stacy DuPree: It's awesome. We've had a pretty good stretch of being off, about five months. Personally, a lot of changes happened to us as a band, and we're all pretty much ready to get going and give this tour all we've got.
DT: What about this tour is different than the ones you've done before? Does anything in particular distinguish it?
SD: Yes; it's our first official tour specifically for our record that came out [Combinations]. It feels fresh. I know we spent a lot of time in preparation. Looking back [to 2003's tour with Coldplay], we were so young. We didn't know what to expect. We've elevated musically since then. This tour is different than our others - we're playing different roles. I've been playing producer - paying attention and looking out for improvements. [We're] using a lot of new sounds - things thrown in there that hopefully will captivate fans.
DT: What are you listening to right now?
SD: Lately I've been liking MGMT; they're really rad. Also, one of the bands we're on tour with, the Envy Corps, they're super good. We met them at one of our shows in the U.K., and when we got a hold of one of their records, I was flipping out, it was so good.
DT: On the topic of media, what else are you enjoying right now - movies, television, books?
SD: I'm reading a book right now, "Blink." It's really interesting, but I feel like it's not the book for me. It's for people who are super analytical, but I think I'm more instinctual.
I don't watch a lot of TV. [As for movies,] seriously, me and my sister, we put on a Harry Potter movie almost every night. I don't know why, but Harry Potter is always good. Also, I love "Rushmore" or any Wes Anderson movie.
DT: Okay, I'm going to ask my one cliche University of Texas question - what are some things you like about or like to do in Austin?
SD: To be honest, I haven't spent that much time in the city. We played SXSW a few times, and I got to hang out downtown. I like Waterloo Records, and Stubb's Barbecue is really good. Austin seems like such a trendy, cool place though. I'd like to see more.
