Unfortunately, the previews for "The Ruins" portray it as another "Turistas" abomination of filmmaking: A group of young, hot American teens go on vacation to Mexico and suddenly start dying in mysterious, frightening ways.

Thankfully, "The Ruins" has a few redeeming factors. First and foremost, it's based on a book that earns praises from the scare-master himself, Stephen King. Even better, the author of the book wrote the screenplay, eliminating the possibility of someone else ruining a good book. (For a full book-to-screen analysis, check out next week's Daily Texan.) Finally, the movie is directed by Carter Smith, who was responsible for the creepy short "Bugcrush." For those who adore horror films, the un-rated clips online promise that the film will be gore-a-riffic if nothing else.
